Here is how I added an IC to my 84.
I decided not to convert to and figured this
setup out, paralleling the JS Kit. It works good,
is real cheap and simple to do and can be
removed if so desired. The only modification
is to the alternator bracket. With this photo
and this post, I won't bother the guys in this
forum again as I realize that adding parts to
a HA offends a lot of folks.

Looks good to me. Don't leave here on account of a few "purists". Brad

Ya I'm def not what you would call a purist. just rather go as far as I can with what I got. I like being the underdog hot air...:)

It never gets old seeing your setup... Amazingly it is made from factory parts. The turbo is still in the same location. Functionally it is still a HA car with improved parts from Buick. Buick used a different intake on the 86 because they were also looking to improve the flow and cool the engine and turbo.

Even for the purist, if they decided to go back STOCK, they could easily change the car back stock in 1 hr or less (but WHY ). I am working on a complete guide to the swap. My desktop publishing is rusty, so bear with me.....

Even if you do not put a intercooler on your car during the swap, you will benefit from the swap.... By mounting the Throttle Body of the turbo to the front of the intake, you will improve throttle response, and will allow for improved airflow.

Leeo, Ms. Jamie, Brent and others did CHANGE the Game with their levels of performance. 1984 was the OFFICIAL year of the REVOLUTION. The GN had the TBI Corvette by the balls:biggrin:. As Buick turned the Regal (Clark Kent) into Superman (1986), the BRASS:confused::confused::( at GM was not happy.... GM told BUICK to stop... One could only imagine what would have happened if BUICK had continued into 1988 like the Monte Carlo SS. Three cars benefitted from the 1987 departure...

* The Corvette moved back to the KING of GM status

* The Buick mighty V6 ended up in the Anniversary Edition Trans Am:cool:
GM does have memory like a elephant... When they brought back the F
Car... humm look who did not come back, The Pontiac Trans Am... In 1989 guess who was the KING of GM... 1 guess... it was not the Corvette:(...

* The Supercharged Buick became a cult engine.... Pontiac, and Buick put it
in alot of their mid size models... GM really was not happy about this... GM
made sure that the BUICK Supercharged engine would NEVER show up in a
rear wheel drive platform... HELL, it even showed up in a limited Edition
Monte Carlo SS and Impala SS.

GM is so SHADY, the GN 200r4 ended up in LO5/LO3 9C1 Police Caprices and Impalas. GM took over the GN trannys and placed behind some Cadillacs also..
As a proud Buick owner, I doubt I will ever buy any Chevys in the near future.. The FAT Camaro does nothing for me. As a Buick guy, the Corvette does nothing for me either... Hell I could get a nice GNX or possibly 4/5 GN's for the price of the Z06.....

BTW,
Cadillac is going down the same road as BUICK..... but I wonder how long will GM allow the Supercharged LS series engines power the Cady's.

Hey! That last pic looks farmilliar....thats my setup with the checkered blk and wht garage tiles in the background.

I love it...and it works great.

I havent made an effort to get to the track (since there isnt one close by) but I plan on taking it to a local mustang dyno to see what its got. This setup is MUCH quicker then my hotair setup ever was.

Check my sig for what I have done.....

Any guesses on HP or quarter times

HOTSIX
I would would think on the low end atleast 450-475hp. I am not sure it you have ever boosted the TA33 over 20-25 lbs, and the alky set right.... But with everything right maybe low 500-525 hp... Sound like 10 sec. to me:eek: and CERTAINLY a different way to get to the 10 sec. club:biggrin:

I believe 6 TO GO amd HOTSIX have taken different approaches to being TOTALLY Different and GOING FAST...

Agreed. Its awesome to see guys keeping the hot air setup with the turbo in the back, and modding it to what they want instead of going full 86/87 front mount. Not hatin' on the guys that do that, but its nice to see some creativity here.

Ive never checked the car HP wise and NEVER run it.

My biggest downfall is tuning and with no scan tool I'm toast.

Theres a local guy that knows GN's and tunes. I'm going to have him tune mine and then I'll dyno it to let you all know where I am.

My trans is built for power with lots of hardend parts so now I need to tune and get it together.

Do you really think my HP numbers are that high???

It's interesting that dan770431 has not posted since he started this thread

Do you really think my HP numbers are that high???

In a single word............NO!!

If it were that easy to make 500hp in a Hot Air 10's would be dropping in every bodies lap. Besides, how do you expect to dyno 500hp at the wheels with a turbo that only supports 400hp at the crank. You have everything it takes to make 500hp "except" the turbo. For that you will need a TA 61 or bigger. You might be able to squeak in with a TA 60. But nothing smaller. I know Brent has a TA 54 but that's a Precision brand that supports over 500hp.

With all that said you should still be able to squeak into the 11's with a good 60ft with all the goodies you have.

Pete - I'm happy with anything in the 12's to be totally honest!!!!

How big can a hotair guy go and still clear the hood???

Id like to go bigger - just not sure what I can fit in that location. If I went larger, and grabbed the exhaust cutout 'dump' pipe - I might be able to relieve some of my restriction and spooling issues....

Mainly I have to tune my current combo to its max potential so I can enjoy the car - as I havent done so as yet!

So just how big can a hotair guy go and still clear the hood...

From my observation as big as a 70 series although it would be a custom job.

First off if you have spooling problems then you have other issues. With your combo and that small turbo you should not have spooling issues at all. Your set up will more than out flow the TA 33 that you have. You should be able to light the tires from a stand still.

Pete

Sorry no I came across wrong there....no spooling problems.

Just looking at going bigger and not sure what fits....I dont wanna get too crazy where I have a fitment problem but Id like to be able to crank it up a notch or three....start cranking out some real HP.

Wiring harness

When switching from an 84-85 intake to an 86 or 87 wouldn't you need a new wiring harness and 86 computer also...also I was told you would need to tap the block for an oil hole too?? I saw some where on this site somebody cut a 84 manifold in half and gutted it...Would that really make it breathe like an 86 or 87 ? I just purchased an 84 engine too..and am putting it into a Regal 83

I have not been near a PC in a week... My Dad has been in the Hospital with a blocked arteries. I will be getting back to this project very soon. I have gathered some needed info and will be working with 6 TO GO and HOTSIX on pictures. I have a local guy who will be modding a couple of upper bonnets.

Even if this guide helps change nothing but the intake, there is much improvement in just moving the TB off the turbo.

Manifold Modify

Thanks for the shoutback !! Sorry to hear of your father..I have been through what you are going through with both of my parents already. Its Tough !!
If you ever get any bonnets modified pretty soon let me know and I will purchase one off you. I have sent away for a 87 intake already...I will need a bonnet and have to modify it myself if I do not hear back from you.. You had some really helpful photos there and that has me running with the ball..I was looking at a turbo that was watercooled too...I asked for more info from the seller but I got nothing from him...a lot of these sellers on e-bay have no idea of what they are selling. So you just used the stock ignition system and the 85 throttle body with this setup ?? Vince

86 Throttle body ??

I noticed you went to a 86 throttle body...Is that because it is better than the 84 or just because it bolts right up ??
