Well as most of you know, GN and Turbos T's have plenty of potential packed in that small little V-6 that could easly spank most cars seen on the street..... but "stock", how qwuick are these cars compared to other "muscle" cars like the LS1 Camaro, Mustang GT, and even the Viper. And how do they compare to the older Muscle cars of the day?.....Well as we all know these cars kick azz! But heres some more info ....

A bone stock TR running stock boost would get spanked by most of the modern era musclecars. A stock TR would run low 14's in good tune. Sticky tires with a few more psi and it would start hanging with maybe late model mustang GT's. If you want to hang with a stock 03-04 cobra, you better have more mods and be a solid 12 second car, although an 03-04 cobra with slicks, pulled swaybar and a smaller blower pulley can run mid 11's. Detroit has come a long way in the last 10 years.

You mean 20 years right? ;)

Ok I will chime in on this one.

Soley going on STOCK I would say the GN/TR's can hang or beat most older muscle cars.
To compare my stock 86 gn ran 14:40 to my stock 68 GTO 14:50...
You add mods & the game changes.
The GTO needed traction offline. I added 2 mods to the GN & it went 13:80.

AS FOR THE NUVO MUSCLE STOCK with no mods I have to give the upper hand too the newer cars. I have seen a lot of Stangs, Vettes, TA's, CTS Some Rice stuff pretty much beat stock GN's.. That is what I notice at my local drag strip.

Lets Face it our cars are going the route of the older muscle cars, COOL, Nice looking but not RACE cars. Unless we make them that way with mods.

I agree.

Most people put all focus on E.T. when MPH thru the 1/4 is the true indicator of horsepower. A stock 86-87 GN or T-type would run 96-97 MPH trap speeds on a avarage day with 70 degree ambient temp. Most classic 60 and 70's musclecars didn't run much over 100 thru the 1/4 with few exceptions so a GN is close but on the low end MPH wise.

As far a newer cars go the GN would probably have a tougher time. LS1 powered Camaro's which are a dime a dozen wil run 105+ thru the 1/4 stock which is on par with GN or T-type with the boost turned up, with good gas and a chip. You also wouldn't want to mess with a Subaru WRX STI, Evo 8 or an SRT4 with a stock GN not to mention a GTO or even a SRT Charger with a stock GN.

In regards to heavy hitters like the Viper GTS or a new Z06 don't even think about it. What the GN's and T-types have going for them is the 20 years of shared experience from poeple that have been playing with them from the begining. There is a huge amount of untapped performance.

In stock form you should choose your battles wisely. Once modified the playing field is leveled and the turbo cars start to show their true colors.

I think that on the bottom end our cars can hang with and even beat most cars, even the newer camaros, cobras, and maybe some sport cars. Our cars went 0-60 in what 4.6? That's no slouch. I think our cars put out torque like the old big block muscle cars, but have technologically advance supsension systems like the newer cars that allows us to hook up a whole lot better. I think our brick bodies, and restrictive heads among other stuff might hold us back in the mph and hp figures.

I think your point about bottom end torque is right on the money. The part about the advanced suspension is off base. There is no functional suspension difference between my '86 T-type and my old '70-'72 GS's. You're right about the "brick" areodynamics though. ;)

It's fun to compare, but......

doesn't give a realistic picture. The Camaro, TA, etc has had the benifit of 20 more years of development, tweaking and everything to make them, stock for stock, a more superior performing car. Had the same held true for the TR, you can rest assured we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Put them back in their respective time period and you remember how it was. The TR ruled. Too many variables for a fair comparison.

When the TBs came out they shocked the older muscle cars by being as fast or faster than them. Now the same is true for the TBs. A stock GXP Grand Prix will run a sub 14 with fwd. Not bad for fwd, today's anti polutions stuff and decent gas mileage for a performance car.

its funny to read this, brings back memorys..first time i saw a gn(86) i was with friends hanging out,my 68 mustang(i was young) had the 289 with 410 gears and a stick shift and minor performances, all my buddys thought my car was the shibitz, the guy asked to race,we all had a laugh and then more after we saw it had a 6..we drove with a crew of followers to the end of jacaranda blvd(by the interstate here in florida)we all were drinking and talking about how bad we were going to smoke him,all the girls were loving it,well he smoked my ars...twice(i spun)..we were floored and confused and pissed, didnt take it well...about a month later we were with some new girls just driving around wooping up on cars during a 60 mile north trip to the lazer show, when another one went by us,i looked at my buddy that witnessed our last defeat and we didnt take chase, well the light ahead turned red...anyway you can guess the rest.. :frown: ..my first tr i got much later, built it and before the break in i totalled it..now i got a gn,it has went 11.9/119 letting off, running fat,in drive, not a finished tune..yes its got upgrades, but still is quite..my 68 camaro i just got up and the motor is sick sounding in a good way,400, dart heads,10-1,big solid cam,410 gear..mandwell bends with flowmaster...its too noisy and a torque monster,i only went once so far to the track since the build, trailered it..went 12 flat twice, both times it broke loose(mt streets) and i let off and got back into it,it spun then hooked and went,i went threw at 7200 rpm and the motor dynoed power up to 6400...anyway 1 car needs a tune and 1 may need a overdrive and slicks, but its hard to believe the power out of these cars...stock to stock, who cares..the manufactures add things to slow them down so they still show some gas mileage,so take a stock 68 camaro with no emmisions and built to run on real gas and compare it to a tr car that is got sooo much stuff holding the power back  its hard to compare, but yes they still kept up with them, the one i ran in 86 was stock, then again i was in a stang ...no matter what all muscle cars show the tr cars respect,if they dont we take it..plain and simple..
