how does the ALDL work?

when i got my scanmaster i figured each sensor had its own seprate plug in the ALDL. turned out i was wrong, and all the sensor data comes threw one wire. can some one explain to me how one wire can contain so much info?

Basically, you are hooked up to a computer (the ECM)...

The wire is a datastream with actual binary data on it (like your computer's serial port).
