How to post an avatar?

I finally got 500 posts, but everytime I try to d/l an avatar it says the image is too large. How have you guys got yours up here? did you crop it or what?

I believe the instructions say something about sending the avatar to one of the moderators/admin's. ?? That's how I got mine to work.

I have used photoshop in the past to resize them to an appropriate size.
