Hello everybody:

I do not run my GN 87 in racetracks or anything like that. The car is my daily driver and is running OK and when I push the acceleration pedal all the way the Turbo takes a few seconds to kick in and then it really runs fast as it´s supposed to do.

My question is the following, the other day I happened to be just beside a friend in a red light. He was driving a Ford Pick Up, he dared me to a small race right there, when red changed to green I fully stepped on the acceleration pedal but my friend managed to beat me for a few secnds before the turbo kicked in and then I passed him easily.

What should I do to start faster?..is there any trick?

hey

next time your freind is next to you, hold the brake with your left foot. ease into the gas(dont floor it, you will light the tires up) you should be able to hold about 2300rpms doing this with out moving forward, but dont let the tires break loose. when your ready to go, floor the acclerator right before you let off the brake, like really close togather, almost at the same time. this is called power braking and will cause you to leave off the line like a bat outta hell!!

powerbraking is not too harmful if it is just once in a while. Once the tires break loose, you loose traction as you launch and spin the tires. If you do it too often, you will burn up those clutches inside. Believe me, I know....lol...Anyway, what you are experiencing is called turbo lag, where the hesitation of the turbo is caused by the delayed exhaust reaction. It takes exhaust to run a turbo, and lots of it to make the turbo spool harder, so that hesitation is becasue there is only a tiny amount of exhaust in the turbo at idle, then all of a sudden a whole crap load. So the turbo literally has to catch up the the speed of the exhaust, and that is what you are experiencing. Like stated before, try holding the brake down, and at the same time, give a bit of gas...If you have a tach, anything between 2000 and 2300 are a good place to start the turbo...You'll hear it kicking in as you do this, and as you floor it and let go of the brake, the turbo will need less time to spool to the max than it did before at idle....Let us know how you do!!

Let me tell you that I am a chilean that worked in New York from 1990 to 1996, I lived in New Jersey in a house I rented in Essex Fells pretty close to Parsippany where you live.

Before returning to my country I bought my GN 87 from a collector, it had 2k miles. I have had a clouple of problems with my car all of these years but overall it´s been a delight to own..it´s the only Grand National in my country as far as I know.

Patricio, that is awsome! Essex Fells is just minutes away, my father grew up in Roseland. I have never been to Chile, however, I now know some chileans do not know what they are missing! I am not sure of the laws where you live, however, keep that car as long as you can...one day, you might find yourself selling it to someone for more money than you ever imagined! Good luck with everything, and hope you have a great time with the car!

you may find a big drug dealer down there willing to give you 100k for it, i say sell it ;).
