So how can I tell if this 84 gn has the stock engine with the intercooled conversion added or was a 86-87 style engine swapped into it?

86-87 blocks are 109 castings with an oil return plumbed into the front of the block just above the timing chain cover. HA blocks are 329 castings an don't even have a boss cast into the block for turbo oil return.

IIRC, they also have different oil pans. A 109 has 20? bolts and a HA has 14?

Clarify here. 84 and some 85 hot airs have 14 bolt pans. Most 85 hot airs have 20 bolt pans. Go by block casting number. Brad

Brad is right, my 85 is 20 bolt pan. very easy to look at front of motor where turbo oil return line is (or should be), the 86/87 has a raised flat portion where the return line plumbs in, the HA don't.

As others have said, if you '84 has the original block, it will be a 14-bolt pan. AFAIK all '84's were 14-bolt.
