I need to remove the a/c head unit and there is a throttle-like cable connected at the back that goes into the guts of the dash. What's the best way to remove this without cutting the cable?

Hmm, I have replaced the cables behind the dash - there should be some sort of clip or way to release the cable - a picture will help a lot.

open glovebox all the way down, disconnect cable from the pivot arm on the hvac box
Much easier to see through the glovebox than squinting beneath the head unit! Thanks! Turns out the pivot had completely disintegrated, it was all white-powdery  Only the plastic clip was holding it firmly in place.
