Hybrid LC2 swaps

So who has done GN transplants into other models which required smog (1975 and newer, I guess)?
What all was involved to get the car smogged LEGALLY? Did you have to go to a referree station? Where do you find one and what costs are involved? What documentation do you need to bring if any?
Looking for info in California. I will be swapping in my motor later this year. The car is an 84 Cutlass.
