ok guys i got my gn, and there was some stuff in the trunk. And up front i have a black box with a switch and a small push button and a clear LED. One of the items in the trunk says Direct Scan Hardware Interface Module. What do i do with this, and do i need anything else? Im completely lost when it comes to this guys, do any of you guys have this? and what did it come with? or should i just order something new to monitor my system?

Direct Scan gives you more information than the other popular scan tools, ScanMaster and Turbolink. However Direct Scan requires modifying you ECM to use it. Hopefully yours already has had this mod done by the previous owner.
The black box with a switch, what does it say on it? Sounds like a scanmaster, but they dont have switches, unless someone wired an on/off switch to it.

i dont recall seeing a name on it, but there is a gray wire running from it, and it looks almost like telephone wire. I will have to get some pics of my car and other things that came with it. What all do i need to get this DS Thing working? I have what looks like a computer ribbon, and i have what looks like a DB 25 connector, i guess to hook into a printer port. Do i need software for it?

Yes you need the software for it.

Should be two cables. The parallel port one goes in the computer and the other one goes on a modified ECM end connector. Your ECM may already be modified.

By the way, nice find! :D

Luckilly the software is free to download. Sounds like all you need to muster up is a laptop.
A nice 486 or Pentium I will do nicely.
Nothing with Windows NT based systems. Direct Scan will run fine with WIN95/98/98SE/ME. NOT WIN XP/NT/2000

Direct Scan

I thought and heard Direct Scan will work with XP as long as you use a bootable DOS disk ? Please let me know your thoughts...thanks!

thanks guys
i downloaded the software, and i hooked it up to my ds. it is saying hardware timeout, but i think it is b/c i dont have it hooked up to my ecu yet. what will this tell me and how do i adjust the way my car runs with this. i read the manual, but i am assuming that you guys do this on the normal.

will i be able to adjust the way my tranny shifts with the ds? b/c right now if i hold the gas pedal starting from first the car will redline unless i get off of it. then when i get off of it the car will shift into second. what do you guys think ?

The hardware timeout is because you don't have it hooked up to the ECU.

No you won't be able to adjust anything using DS. It's a tool to monitor things. There's no two way throughput.

As for how your tranny is shifting, it sounds like the TV (throttle valve) cable is adjusted too tight.
Where all the throttle linkeage is connected to a bracket on the top of the intake manifold you'll see a button "D" shaped and sorta silver in color (unpainted). It's difficult, but if you push in on that, it will release grip on the TV cable, and the plastic part of the TV cable that goes through the bracket can be pulled farward some. Try and pull it forward about 1/2" and then test to see how the shifting goes. The further forward it is moved, the looser (sloppier) and lower rpm the shifts become.

You didn't mention whether your shift problem was at WOT or normal driving. If it's at WOT it doesn't shift, then there's a governor problem in the tranny. If it doesn't want to shift during normal driving conditions then the TV cable needs adjusting.

Thanks TurboDave,
My when at WOT, the car does not want to shift from 1st to 2nd, it redlines. Also my uncle checked the car out and he said that it was probably the governor, b/c he had adjusted the TV cable trying to get things straightend out.

Also how do you know if your engine is running too rich? And if it is running too rich how would you adjust it?
