I know someone has done it: use power injection dash light with SMC

I know someone else must have thought of this-- what did you do to make it work?

thanks,
Scott

From an e-mail of a friend copied from someone else...

For the "power injection" light take a bulb and solder a wire to the center of the bulb and one to the side. The wire on the side of the bulb goes to a ground and the one on the center goes to the red wire going to the control box,
For the "low fuel" light you solder the wires the same but the wire for the center goes to a 12 volt source and the side wire goes to the white wire going to the control box.

I didn't try this myself but if it works on Johns car I will do it on mine.:)

Use a spare or junkyard bulb socket.

Solder to the tab ends which are copper or brass contacts easier to get the wire on.

Snaps right in on a digital dash car where there are no existing dash traces so no shorts no problems.

Use the proper dash lamp bulbs too. :)

How about some more ideas on this:

* anyone have good part numbers for the bulbs needed?

* problems for a NON digital dash car?

* other bright ideas?

thanks,
Scott

Good idea. I even like the idea of using the low fuel light, but the kit already has one on the controller. I think it might be easier though to buy a small bulb and socket from an autoparts store or find one in the junkyard. Has anyone done this to make the low fuel light work for the gas tank? If so I'd like some info.

Thanks,

James

Kirban sells a circuit board for the ANALOG dash cars that has a low fuel warning light bulb on it that plugs into the existing dash hole and allows the light to work like factory.

I have mine on my analog dash car. :)

Sometimes they are for sale in the parts section too, they come out of the Riviera of that generation I believe.

For alky. we use the LOW WASHER FLUID spot in the side pod thingy, similar to the Low Fuel spot.

Hey here is a good tip.Under the hood by the wiper motor there is a green wire lead that was supposed to be used for the PI system.I don't remember if it gets grounded or if it's hot but I foound out about it from cool 84 on this board last year.Do a search on power injection and whatch for the ones where cool posted,he discribes it a little better there.

Dave did your 86 have the bulb in the dash? I remember reading about cool84 finding that wire also, but it was a big debate on what cars had the bulbs.

I am curious too as to which bulb to use also. My kit is DIY and it has a bulb rigged to the boost gauge for now. The bulb I am using is a 194 (?) side marker bulb from my p/u. Do the dash bulbs produce less heat or will this be fine? Since it is only on for short bursts I would think it would but who knows

I think the dash bulbs are also 194's,could be wrong but pretty sure.I did'nt ever actually use the PI light so I can't remeber if the bulb is in there but I do think there is a socket for a bulb there.Pop off the trim.remove the 2 screws, pop in a buld, reassemble and your set.

Took the dash apart and, yes, the dash bulbs are 194s

Now, does anyone know where I can get a couple of the bulb sockets? (other than the junkyard).

EDIT: Found some at Pep Boys--
(1) the power injection light takes a 1/2" inch instrument panel socket, Conduct-tite part number 85835
(2) the lower windshield washer fluid light takes a larger socket I'm using a chrysler part-- Conduct-tite part numer 85816

My favorite GM parts guy believes that PN 2973932 is correct but I couldn't find any of these to check.

I'm going to take and post some pics of my install.

thanks,
Scott

I wouldn't bother looking for the wire. Mine has it and running a hot wire to it turns the power injection light on. It must only be the early 84s because my dad's 84 doesn't have it although he installed a light in the existing socket and ran a wire to it so it's functional with the JayC alky kit. I checked on his 86 also just for the heck of it and no wire as expected. I've always wondered if it was a low level warning or just to let you know the "power injection" was functioning. It's kind of neat there's a trouble code in the ECM for PI also. I wonder how close these cars came to actually having factory alky/water injection.

no easy hookup wire on 87s

Yes, from sifting through the archives and looking at my own car I think it is safe to say that the 86s & 87s did not have the wire that turbobuicksix describes-- as I write above, I didn't even have bulb sockets!

MY POWER INJECTION LITE GOES ON THE SAME TIME AS MY BACKUP LIGHTS.............AT 10 LBS. OF BOOST.
I SAY...........BEAT 'EM, THEN BLIND 'EM! :D

YOU HAVE TO ADMIT.........YOU HAVE A VIVID IMAGINATION. EVER THINK ABOUT EAR PLUGS ????

You know, I work in the optical field maybe I can develope some "eye plugs" for all the screaming that is done on message boards.;)

Think of the Opti-grab from the Jerk.
