Here's my setup as of right now

TE-44 turbo running 24-25 psi in all gears
50 lb injectors
extender chip with 23 degrees timing in first gear, 21 in the rest
bone stock motor
fuel pressure 45 psi line off
dual nozzle smc alcohol injection, pump speed on 7, spray on point at 1 lb of boost (as soon as you hit boost it sprays)
straight 93 octane

now here's the deal...i am trying to cure my transitional knock problem...before i had the spray on point at 10 lbs of boost...well i was knocking like crazy at first...you could hear the engine pinging like mad but then it would go away once the alcohol was spraying at full force...of course i didn't like that and i was seeing on turbolink that the esc counts would jump up to like 40-60 counts as soon as i went WOT but then it wouldn't register anymore counts...it registered between 1-5 degrees of retard at first but then would go away...

so i turned down the spray on point all the way to when i hit 1 lb of boost it starts spraying...my turbo spools up like instantly and will hit and peg that 25 psi mark in a hurry...so spraying at 10 lbs of boost was way too late (at least for my car) for that alcohol to take effect right away...

so i took another test run...had turbolink hooked up...this time i only registered 5 counts of esc and no knock retard...i didn't hear the pinging of the motor anymore like i did...amazingly spraying that early doesn't bog the motor like i thought it was going to...when i went WOT the tires were squeeling at 35 mph...

i have verified that both nozzles are indeed spraying because i took off the uppipe and had someone press the test button while i held it over the tank, both nozzles spray perfect

my question is...is it possible to get esc counts but no knock retard??? i mean esc counts are how many times the motor has pinged correct? my o2 mvs during that last run were between 810-825 which is a tad rich but you have to compensate some richness with the alcohol...

does this all make sense and am i doing the right thing? i will keep the car's tune like this for a while and hopefully i won't see anymore knock...the only bad thing is that i cannot go part throttle or the alcohol will spray and bog the motor...it's either WOT or no throttle for me now:D which i don't really mind

another thing i thought about...was with this extender chip, since it has high timing in first gear...i wonder if that high timing was the main cause of the startup knock i was getting and then it tailed off later because the timing would drop to 21 degrees...

I don't know about the other stuff, but I think your chip is 23* in 1st and 2nd gear......21* in 3rd and 4th. Was it pinging in either 1st or 2nd gear?

it would ping badly in 1st and 2nd gears (usually from a slow roll) but in the higher gears and higher speeds it was fine with no knock...

Hmm.....That 23* timing should work with your setup. Are you sure you don't have the timing advanced via the Translator +? And that alky coming on at 1 psi boost is funky......I think it is masking another problem that you may have.

well here's the deal...

i am running just the ls1 maf sensor and translator, not the PLUS version, so my timing in my extender chip is preset...i have both WOT and idle fueling settings on 0 which is no change...

i have had this problem since i have had the car...my blms no matter what chip i use is always PEGGED at 150 at idle (160 on the extender chip) but integrator is always normal between 125-135

now during cruise with the extender chip, the blm number is usually at 136

of course when i go WOT both numbers are stuck at 128 but that is preset in the chip...

i have changed many many parts since i have had this problem and still can't figure it out...i do know one thing, i don't have gaskets on my new driver side poston header and the turbo to pass header flange...maybe i have an exhaust leak there...my vacuum readings on all the lines are between 20-22 hg so that is ok...the o2 sensor is fairly new, a delco GNX sensor and shows healthy cross counts and o2 mvs across the board...

Based on the 160 BLM's, pinging in 1 st and 2nd gear at 23* with alky on at 10 psi boost............ and having to turn on the alky at 1 psi of boost to correct it leads me to think you have a fueling problem. Have you checked fuel pressure while driving it?

ED

Maybe try bumping up your base fuel in the Translator to see if it can get you closer to 128 at idle. Your dip switches in the Translator are set to on, on, off, off?

Ed

yes i have the 4 dip switches set to ON ON OFF OFF

i have tried tinkering with the base fueling and it never made a difference in the blm number...always stays pegged at 160

my car always smells really rich with the exhaust too...hell i can smell it in the engine compartment...maybe i have a leaking header flange to the head or the turbo flanges is leaking...everything is metal to metal...

but if i had a really bad leak like that, wouldn't my spoolup and turbo be really laggy? i mean i can boost to 25 psi in less than a second at WOT...and it stays there until i let off

i remember when my factory ds header had a crack in it...i couldn't boost past 5 lbs it was that bad...

fuel pressure while driving is steady and goes up exactly 1 lb per lb of boost...so i'm close to 70 psi fuel when i hit 25 psi of boost...

 I'm stumped! Sorry I couldn't help ya out, maybe someone else has the answer. ( but I still think the alky on at 1 psi is correcting a fuel problem!)

Good luck

Ed

My question about the Alky on at 1psi is what happens if you hit the test button before getting into the throttle? Does it bog then? If it does, or doesn't have transitional knock when set to turn on at 10psi and you prime the line before going WOT, then you have another problem. I would guess it is just an empty line that is causing knock with your quick spool.

OR

i was running too much boost!

i turned it down to 22 psi and upped the spray on point to 5 lbs of boost...no knock whatsoever at WOT now...still breaks the tires loose at 35...i even got them to chirp at 55 mph...this tranny has alot to do with that but...none the less it pulls like crazy

i will just keep the boost at 22 psi...if i want to go higher i will mix in some 100 unleaded or something...

Hi BLM's are a sign of a problem. Especially when theyre pegged. This will cuase your car to ping like mad. Since the base fueling tables are skewed.

Cuases can be almost anything from a vacuum leak, bad EGR, exhuast leak, bad O2, bad MAF, hole in the IC etc... I'd look for vacuum leaks..this is one of those can be easy or really difficult problems. And I would address this first before continuing to hammer on the motor. One thing is when theyre at 140 or 110..but when theyre pegged..it can be almost anything.

Wishin ya luck..
