My car is idling at 1400rpm for about 15 minutes after startup and will drive at about 20 mph without giving the pedal any weight? I also have been noticing a little bit of hesitation at 1\8th throttle when warm? this is at about 40-50 mph? I have no noledge on how to tune this thing? normal performance upgrades , no vacuem leaks detectable? I have not played with anything since or before noticeing these issues? any help would be apprechated! Tia Kevin I do have a scanmaster! yet its just for knock as I have yet too learn how to tune!

reset both iac and tps to base settings

How do you do that? Stupid question, I know, but I just got my car "today" and need to begin to learn how to do the tuning. I will be looking into getting Turbolink soon. I will also look into the spring cleaning and such at the other site. Thanks!

Check the tps reading on the scanmaster. You have to step through a few things to find it.

Check it at idle foot off the pedal. It should be under .45 volts I prefer under .44volts with the car running.

What is the reading from your car?

I DO NOT HAVE A SC, I USED A DIGITAL METER, SET TO DC PUT A SAFTEY PIN INTO THE MIDDLE LEAD AND GROUND THE BLACK LEAD. WITH THE KEY IN THE ON POSITION (ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING) CK. SB .42, THEN HAVE A FRIEND NAIL THE THROTHLE AND CK MEASURMENT AGAIN SB 4.5 OR A LITTLE ABOVE, IF NOT ADJUSTMENT IS NEEDED TOP SLOT IS USE FOR ADJUSTING IDLE AND BOTTOM SLOT IN FOR WOT ADJUSTMENT. IAC ADJUSTMENT IS AS FOLLOWS REMOVE IAC CLEAN, AND MAKE SURE PINTLE IS LESS THEN 1.125. IF IT IS NOT PUSH IN TO MEASURE 1.0 REINSTALL PUT HARNESS IN. USING A PAPER CLIP GROUND THE RIGHT TWO UPPER PINS IN THE ADL FOR 30 SECONDS. THIS RESETS CORRECT DEPT OF IAC. WITH PAPER CLIP STILL INSTALLED REMOVE IAC HARNESS AND START CAR AND ADJUST IDLE TO 500 RPM TURN OFF CAR PLUG IN IAC RESTART;)

Do you guys use a gauge to monitor the RPM's? If so, which brand/type are you using and where do you purchase? It seems I have a lot of catching up to do, thanks!

IAC Readings Bad?

I tried too adjust the iac today and in closed loop I have to turn the screw all the way just to get a 5 count on the scanmaster? With the gas pedal I had too rev up to 3800 rpm too get up near 20? I am a rookie at this and turned the screw on what appears to be the throttle plate? Today after fully warmed up, car was idling at 1400 with iac count at 14 ? Right now it is idling at 800 with no iac count? TPS is at .44 running, .42 not running and at wot 3.86? I am baffeled PLEASE HELP Kevin

Hey Moneypit, what is Pintle? I see in one of your earlier posts you mention the pintle should be less 1.125, what adjustment is that? Just trying to become more familiar with tuning, I too as having trouble with my idling, rough idle.

Update !

Thank you for the replys and suggestions. I coud not get the iac too climb too 25 so I changed it. The iac is now set and varies in the mid twentys! after installin the new one I still could not get a count till I played with the TPS? As it stands now IAC is within its range, tps is at .42 idle and wot is at 4.00? I am having trouble getting the 480's without loosing the low setting? I am gonna assume the old iac motor is still good ? any more imput would be appreachated. .......Kevin

Try the TPS at .44V at idle car running and check the WOT with the car off of course.

You should get to 4.3V or so and leave it for now.

Check the IACV counts after that. If under 35 or so I would leave it alone.

You can clean the pintle of the old IACV and there is probably nothing wrong with it if the pintle looks good no pits etc.

Salvage I played with it for over an hour and was lucky too grt it to 400 , it may actually be like 380? I had idle set all over the 40,s and could not get wot any higher? thats when I decided too get the idle set and leave it for the night! Maybe I just need more patiance? I did have too reajust the iac so maybe with another attempt I may get it right? I will report back thanks .Kevin

Can someone tell what is the pintle?

Whistle pig, make sure you move the carpet mat away from under the pedal. As this will have an impact with the pedal reaching the floor, thus giving you reasons why your not reaching the 4.55 minimum at WOT.

Just a thought as this happened to me.

Dannyo

Dannyo , I took the floormat out but i would like too leave the carpet alone as I gringe when floormat gets dirty! Gonna give it another try tonight. As for the pindle I am as lost as you? kevin

Whistle Pig...Danster,

The pintle is part of the IAC valve. If you take the IAC out of the throttle body you'll see a pointy valve stem.....that's the pintle.

The IAC uses a stepper motor to move the pintle in and out to control the idle speed as load changes....for example, when you turn on your air conditioner at idle....or when you put it into gear from park.

The IAC motor has a certain range to work in. The computer uses the IAC to control the idle RPM's to whatever is programmed into the chip....most chips are set to 750-800 RPM's. The IAC motor runs the pintle in or out to let a small amount of air by-pass the throttle plate. This is why we adjust the screw on the throttle plate to set the IAC #'s on you scan tool.

By jumpering the two pins on the ALDL port the IAC motor will go to it's "home/parked" position.

A good trick on the tps sensor is to use a dremel tool to enlarge the holes slightly....then when you re-mount the tps sensor push it all the way forward (toward the radiator) and tighten the screws. This moves the arm of the tps sensor out further on the little pin that moves with the throttle plate shaft. (make sure that the pin on your's isn't bent....could be your problem)

Sorry for so long....hope it helps,
John

Whistle Pig, how are the IAC counts displayed on the scanmaster, "cc"? Is that what you went by to set your IAC?

FYI, On the TPS adjustment, if you tilt the the sensor upwards, makes the WOT count higher. Kind of a combination of pullin the sensor forward towards the fron of the engine and moving the sensor up and down to give you the readings you need.

Thanks for the info, John. I now understand the IAC. I will check mine out.

Dannyo/ John and everybody else that has had the patiance to stick with this thread, Thank You . The IAC is now happily hanging in the mid 20's. I finally got the TPS too .46 and 4.74 wot. John I think what you mentioned helped as after I took the sencer off to see what I am deeling with when placed back in it seemed to move more freely. I used just one screw till I got it in specs , and then tightened both down. appears too be all set and idles well. Dannyo the iac is about the 12th screen on the scanmaster and it does spell out iac. this is what I was instructed too get to within 20 to 25 for a target count # by adjusting the screw as mentioned above!! .......Kevin
