in the process on installing a tranny, a couple questions...

alright, i have the tranny most of the way in, but i cant finish the job because i am waiting for a dipstick tube to get to me from Mike McCoy (my old one got crushed...) and have a couple questions...

first, when i get the dipstick in and start to fill up the tranny up how much do i fill it up initally? then i run it though the gears, then check it again.. and add accordly... right? then repeat?

second, are all the bolts around the bellhousing supposed to be the same? because when i took the tranny out, the top passenger side bolt was a 15mm and the rest were 14's... should i replace the 15mm with a 14? or is that one bolt supposed to be a 15? the 15mm bolt also appears to be larger in diameter...

then, on Gnttype.org says that there is supposed to be a ground strap that goes to the top driver side bolt.. i didnt have one there, so if i didnt take one out, should i not worry about this? or is this missing ground something to be worried about?

and lastly, when was looking at my converter (which was supposedly sent out and restalled when i had the tranny rebuilt the first time... ) it had "HS" that was engraved into the converter (it is still the D5). does the HS mean high stall?

thanks...

when filling the tranny...put in about 5 quarts...then start her up and shift through all the gears while keeping the foot on the brake...then add 5 more quarts...then start checking the fluid after that...

my rebuilt tranny from janis took 13 quarts

oh yeah, my filter has rust on the bottom of it... is it bad to use this filter? or do you think i can clean this rust up? its not bad.. but its there...

i will try to clean it up, but if it doesnt is it a bad idea to use that filter?

thanks

-Neil

Buy as new filter, they are cheap and it's worth it. Also, find that ground strap and get it installed. The car needs it.

but the ground strap isnt there, i sat under the car looking for it... and it just wasnt there.. maybe it was relocated?

I relocated my ground strap to a intake manifold bolt, It makes one less thing to remember hooking up when dropping/replacing tranny. Look to see if someone did this.

well, when the tranny was out, i looked around for a ground strap, and i did see one that looked like either going into the block or the head... so is it possible that some one just found an unused hole and placed it there?
