I had a spare tranny from a GN I parted. I knew it worked and the fluid was spotless when I took it out of the GN. So I installed it into my Regal a year later. It goes into reverse fine, and I can shift down to first gear. I even drove it for a short distance down in first. But when I put it into drive, it moves forward slightly and cuts out. This is my first tranny install in several years, but I followed the Turbo Regal tech instructions and tips from threads on this site. I've adjusted the TV cable, but it hasn't helped. I've compared the linkage to another car to confirm I set it up correctly and it seems to move smoothly when shifting. Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, I tried re-adjusting the tv cable and now it dies when I shift into reverse!

Do you mean the engine stalls?
Torque convertor clutch could be not releasing.

I'm sorry for not being clear. Yes, the engine stalls out. Please tell me more about possible solutions if it's the TCC. Thanks for the reply. I do appreciate any help.

Could be a bad TCC solenoid, or brake light switch. Brake switch unlocks TCC when depressed. Do a search for Torque Convertor Solenoid ot TCC on here and see what comes up. There are easy ways too check it. Maybe unplug the plug on left side of trans or brake switch and see if it stalls.

I disconnected the plug, but it still stalls out on shifting into any gear. Now that I think about it, the converter never locked up with the previous tranny. I never do any highway driving, so it was low on my "to do" list. Will the converter lock up in first? I didn't think it was possible until 2nd.

Could the TCC solenoid be stuck keeping the TCC clutch engaged all the time?

Only in 2nd or higher. The hydraulic circuit in the trans is designed so there is no oil going to the lockup circuit in 1st gear so a stuck solenoid cannot lock the converter in 1st.

if you install a lock up converter on a trans with a non lock up valve in the pump itll stall like that .there is no oil to hold the clutch off.

Ahhhh.... Thanks Chris. That's it. That never crossed my mind but I'm pretty sure that's it. Now what?!?!

That's what I was afraid of. I was hoping I could put a paper clip and some gum somewhere to fix it. I'm not looking forward to pulling the tranny again. Do you have a converter that you'd recommend for my setup? Thanks again for all the help to all.
