I am wondering at what size turbo is it good to go with an external wastegate over the stock style internal wastegate? I am also wondering if you can make a stock turbo have an external wastegate.? I am wondering becasue I am converting my 85 GN to an 87 drivetrain and I have a stock turbo and injectors now but plan to go bigger and am debating which downpipe to go with. I want to up the turbo to a PT-61 and then would need bigger injectors. I have a bigger fuel pump and hot wire kit and a better trans with vigilante converter. I just don't want to buy a new downpipe when I upgrade the turbo (I am still in college and don't have the money to keep switching downpipes). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Scott

Stock style wastegate with a P trim 70.

No heads and cam yet but no boost control issues at all using a HD actuator and 1 or 2 solenoids and a BSTC.

I wouldn't go external with a 61 turbo.

Most boost control issues are owner related not paying attention to how the system works.

If the turbo hole is opened up and the puck covers the hole and you are operating in the range of the actuator it should work just fine.

Stick with the internal wastegate. There is no reason to change to an external gate.
