i know the best thing to do is replace the stock pump, but i was wondering how far will a hot wire kit take you? i mean, after what mods do you actually HAVE to replace the pump with a walbro 307, 340, etc????

Stock fuel pumps were not adequate for the stock setup in the first place. Replacing the fuel pump should be on your first to do list.

Stock pump??

If you look at the capacity of the stock pump, and the stock injectors, they were closely matched. And they were set up for the STOCK boost level. For pump gas, without alky, the boost level can't be increased much, so the stock pump with hot wire, might be OK. But if you do anything that lets you increase the boost, and thus the air flow (lbs/hr) then the injectors and the pump will be marginal, at best. You can up the fuel pressure to get a little more out of the injectors but then the pump will lose ground. So, short answer, the stock pump is good for stock power, and won't go much beyond the "as sold" output. As soon as you make any mods that require higher boost/more fuel, the stock pump is dangerous to head gaskets.
