Is anyone here running the Kenne Bell chip for 84/85 TR's. My T came with one installed and I was wondering if anyone was running it and could tell me their experiences? TIA

Moe

My experience, and I'm going on memory from nearly 10 years ago, is it's a good chip. Mine had a ton of timing and was a little too aggressive for CA pump gas but it worked great with 100 octane. By too agressive, I mean it had enough timing that I could only run ~13psi on pump gas where I could run 18psi on my JC 18 degree chip. Throw some good gas in there and crank the boost and it works great.

I should add that I think all of his 84/85 chips were off the shelf units and identical but I'm not 100%.

We have the "good" 93 octane out here. I only plan on running 14 psi max anyhow. I also have the stock chip and another 93 octane that I am not sure whose it is. I have to look at it more closely.

Moejr- If you are trying to stay stock keep the chip and leave the car alone. The problem with our cars is that the MAF is no longer produced. Remanufactured MAF's do not work. The Ignition system is cost prohibitive. The availability of 84/85 ECM chips is pathetic. You will soon realize that you need to convert to the 87ECM, 87IGN, get a specific chip burned for your setup. Also, Alky INJ eliminates the need for an intercooler and it is alot cheaper. Just a starter. Brad

Brad my sig is the extent of mods being done. What is involved in converting to the 87 ecm? I have done the 86/87 conversion before and will do it again when I save up the cash. Can you run the LT1 maf and translator on an 84/85? I will not run alky. Not my thing. Thanks.

i have his chip in mine and it helped to smooth out the idle and car runs great.

Seriously, come on, stop it already with the "alky eliminates the need for an intercooler". It helps, it's great, but it is not a replacement for an intercooler. It is not cheaper. I've done both and again I will say I would go with the IC first, then alky. Both together make a good combo. I've got data for both and the IC wins hands down.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Let me add to that, that the intercooler never needs to be filled back up and no pump will ever go out causing your motor to blow ;)
I also never had a problem with my remanufactured MAF sensor

Back to topic at hand:
The Kenne Bell chip is a good chip. I had one in my '85 when I first got it. If your want to go with a LT1 and translator, might as well throw a '87 ECM with a custom chip in the car too.

Thanks for all the help. I am gonna return the car to bone stock chip and everything and let it break in on that. Then I'll save up the money to convert to the 87 ecm. I have done the Coil and Module conversion before.

How hard and what is involved in converting the ecm? TIA.

ECM and 87 MAF. You can either install a MAT sensor or have the chip burned so that the check engine light doesn't come on since the hotairs don't have a MAT sensor.

No wiring changes? Cool. I will just have the chip burned for no MAT. Can't do it now as the rebuild is gonna take everything I have.

Thanks for the info.
