Redoing the kitchen this spring. Been reading all sorts of books on how to remodel a kitchen. We put all new appliances in when we moved into the house in Feb 03 and have been living with the worn out cabinets since then.

Been to Lowes and the Depot more times than I can count checking out the different types/brands of cabinets. Was first going to go with the Mills Pride ones that you put together but not really sure on how long they would last. (Planning on dying in this house unless I hit the Powerball)

We have a typical raised ranch with a 11 x 12 kitchen with not much cabinet space. I am putting our new side by side refrigerator where the back door off the kitchen was as I put a patio door off our dining room onto our deck and it seems sort of dumb to me to have another door 3 ft away. We will be gaining some more cabinet space that way and I am also going to put in an L-shaped peninsula with some base cabinets and wall cabinets above that.

Anyway, to make a long story short we have decided to go with Kraft Maid cabinets as they seem to be better built than the in-stock stuff. Sat with the guy at Lowes who plugged in my measurements into the computer and when he hit the total button I almost died. Over 10k for just white cabinets, nothing like Oak or Cherry, etc. WTF??? All the displays said around $2200 for a typical L-shaped 10x10 kitchen. I am not on a Cadillac budget for this, somewhere above a Pinto budget is more like it. We went over the item list and one price was wrong, $3700 for and end cap???

He had plugged in all the bells and whistles on the base cabinets so that really upped the price around the $6300 range. Finally got things down to around $3400 as we don't need the fancy ass pullout racks, etc. Almost felt like we were buying a car like when the salesman is trying to get you to go for all the options.

Anyone have experience with the Kraft Maid line of cabinets?

Will be taking down the soffits in the kitchen and patching in the drywall on the wall and ceiling where they were and then will be putting in a glue-up tile ceiling that looks like the old tin style ceilings and then crown molding too. New countertops, (laminate, can't swing Corian or granite!) Pretty much figuring that it will take most of the spring to do everything.

Mark:

Kraft Maid makes a decent cabinet - not premium, but not cheap either. I did them in my townhouse a few years ago.

Interesting - we're both working on the same project at the same time. I just got done finishing my basement and now I'm on to the kitchen. Did you end up buying from Lowes or HD or from another cabinet place?

Also, how long for delivery on the cabinets?

Rich

Leaning towards Lowes right now. We already had a two hour session with the guy there. Cool program they use for the design, called 20/20. Just need to tweak my design a bit (which means it WILL end up costing a bit more):( Was at HD today and the cabinets are just a bit cheaper by the linear foot but I think that is just a figure to pull you in and then the real costs start adding up. We have an appointment at Lowes for Thursday night to finalize everything.

Still have to redo the master bath before I even think about tackling the basement. Our house probably sounds like a disaster but it really isn't too bad. All the improvements I have made make it 100% better than it was. When we were shopping for houses I wanted a nice level lot, two car garage, two bathrooms and a nice neighborhood. Only thing is, the house was built in 1970 and only had one owner who didn't do ANY improvements to the house since it was built except for siding.

Hey Mark,

Kraft Maid cabinets are good, well i would say its all right for the type of cabinets that they make, but it all depends on what you are comparing it to, i'm actually a kitchen and bath designer and mainly deal with high-end european cabinets, but i have seen Kraft Maid cabinets and they are good for the price, 20/20 is a Kitchen CAD program that they use, its a nice program, but only for kitchen designs but like you said earlier you want to die in your house right, well same goes for your car, your'e going to keep it for as long as you can, just like the materials that goes in your house, you want the best possible product that you can get for a good deal, like anybody else right :D if you can tell me what you are going to do or want to achieve in your kitchen and bath, maybe i can give you some suggestions, let me know, give me a call on my cel#(808)222-6456 or PM me hopefully i can try to make short and direct to what you want, hopefully that will help.

I just finished my basement and put cabinets and countertop in an 8-foot section of it. It was $1,776 (easy to remember) for that crappy little area. I got one step up from the put-it-together-yourself stuff at HD. I don't recall the brand but it's manufactured exclusively for HD. They were cheaper than the Kraft Maid and look decent. The $1,776 included the laminate-that-looks-like-solid countertop (fools lots of people). The fridge is fake too. Looks stainless but isn't. Pic (didn't put the toe kick up yet, but it came with the cabinets):

Great job you did down there - the glass block is awesome and it seems that we're both on the same page as far as pinball/arcade games are concerned..

Hell, sometimes I think I finished my basement just so I could buy an upright Ms. Pacman machine :)

Thanks. The building inspector was a million years old and said he hadn't seen glass block since the 60's. I wanted a way to get natural light from the workshop into the rest of the basement without actually being able to *see* the workshop. Ditto on the landing for the stairs. Pittsburgh-Corning has an "EZ Track" system that doesn't require any mortar. It came out decent - kinda retro.

I'd like to get a video game to go along with the pinball game - I really like Tempest but hear they're tough to maintain.

Jim's basement turned out awesome! Went thru every page of his website getting ideas on how to do mine. So many projects, so little time and money.

Guess we will go with the Lowes deal. Can't really go for the high end stuff but don't want the bottom of the line junk either. Just getting ready to fine tune a few things before we finalize the deal tomorrow. I am sure the Kraft Maid is better than the stuff we have in the kitchen right now. Seems better constructed than the Mills Pride cabinets.

I think we may be related turbojimmy.

When I had the framing done, I went CRAZY with outlets and jacks for monster cable, coax, everything. Used the wall plate terminals just like you did. Figured that I'd only have it down to the framing once so I ran everything I could think of.

Now I wish I had thought about the glass block. DAMN.

P.S. If you're looking for an upright, check out www.tntamusements.com - company in PA that refurbishes them and even sells them with warranty and maintenance packages.

There's a few things I'd do different with it but it came out mostly like I had envisioned which is unusual for me and DIY projects. Usually what's in my head doesn't translate exactly to the finished product.

I painted myself into a corner so-to-speak with regard to a bathroom down there. I shoulda left a spot open for a bathroom but the way I designed the space there's no good spot. Anywhere I put it would be weird. I'm going to put one down there, but it's going to look like an afterthought (because it was). In the short term I might just hang a urinal in the workshop.

Good link on the arcade games - he has a Tempest too. I just dropped a bunch of coin on the GN so it's going to have to wait.

Well this is my line of work. The Craftmade is a good cabinet,if you were closer to the Cleve. area I could probally help you out on the cost. I have had good results with Merrilat and Wellborne ,Stay away from Aristocraft and Cardell....I could go on and on about that junk.Formica came out with a line of laminate called "etchings",its finish really mimicks granite so reallistic it fooled a granite guy.

On to the basement, one arcade game will never do,after you have one,you WILL buy more:D I have close to a dozen now:p

www.usamusementauction.com auctions these off a few times a year.Thats were I get mine from

Spent another 2 hours with the designer at Lowes last night and finalized everything to the way I wanted it. Should come out real nice. I am removing the existing soffits over the cabinets as I hate the way they look and I am putting crown molding on top of the cabinets.

Got a couple of April Fools surprises yesterday but unfortunately they turned out to be real. They had a free sink base offer that expired on March 31st! When we made the appointment LAST week for the final design didn't realize the date for the next appointment was on the 1st! So we lost out on that. At least the sales guy gave us a first time buyer 10% discount but they probably give that to anyone who asks.

Then when we go to check out and my debit card is declined! Cabinets were $3500 and there was over $7500 in the checking account! I thought the cashier was playing an April Fool's prank on me until she showed me the screen on the register. So here I am feeling like a dirtbag with no money when actually I had plenty in the account! Didn't have the checkbook with me so have to go back tonite and stand in line all over again.:(

You have to run the debit cards through as credit for big transactions. Most banks impose a daily limit on cash withdrawals (mine's only $500 a day) - using the card as a debit card is technically a cash withdrawal. When they say "debit or credit" say credit and you should be okay.

We tried it that way too, no dice!

Stopping by and paying with a check today.:)

That is odd - I'd bitch to the bank.

When I bought my carpet and cabinets I opened a Home Depot CC account. Got an additional 10% off and 6-months no interest. I paid it off 2 days before the 6-months was up. They hate it when you do that, but the interest rate is obscene on that stuff.

Jim

Had the cash in the bank! In fact I called them this morning and I have a $1500 a deal limit if I use it as a credit card. In a way I guess that is a good thing so some one can't clean out your bank account if they get a hold of your card.

Old fashioned check will do the trick, just didn't think of bringing it last nite.

I spent around the same on new cabinets, 3,300.00 I think from HD. Not sure of the brand but they are oak in a light finish and am very happy with them. In total I think I spent around 7k for everything including a new oven. I can't even imagine how much it would have cost if I didn't do all the work myself

Now I just started my mom's kitchen and dining room remodel, gutting everything including walls, no rest for the weary:(
or time for fixing or racing cars this summer:mad:

I know - so did I. But you can keep the money in the bank or otherwise working for you for another 6-months by using Home Depot's money for free.

I got quotes in the $18-25,000 range for my basement w/out paint, carpet and tile. I came in at around $12k including everything except the fridge, furniture, and TV.

The quotes didn't include a lot of the "extras" I did myself either. Like the $18,000 quote didn't have baseboard heat or even a sub-panel - just a few taps into the upstairs electrical. Instead I isolated the basement from the upstairs electrically and installed a sub-panel that feeds the basement and workshop. I put in 240V heat, an appliance circuit for the fridge, a separate GFCI-protected circuit for countertop outlets, GFCI-protected circuit for the workshop, 2 circuits for 20+ outlets, and a separate circuit for the lights. Connecting the sub-panel to the main panel made me a little sweaty but I lived to tell about it.

Of course none of the quotes had glass block, double closets in the playroom, wiring for the sound system, phone or cable, insulation (I insulated all the walls and ceiling), HVAC (tapped into my existing forced air system), etc.

HD wanted $8/foot to install the tile. So that little 100 SF space would have cost me over $1,000 in materials and labor. Cost me around $300 to do it myself - including the tools (which I can use again).

I knew nothing about this stuff when I started. I bought Wiring 1-2-3 from Home Depot and their Tiling 1-2-3 book. The people at www.doityourself.com are a big help, too. Got tons of info over there.
