Redoing the kitchen this spring. Been reading all sorts of books on how to remodel a kitchen. We put all new appliances in when we moved into the house in Feb 03 and have been living with the worn out cabinets since then.
Been to Lowes and the Depot more times than I can count checking out the different types/brands of cabinets. Was first going to go with the Mills Pride ones that you put together but not really sure on how long they would last. (Planning on dying in this house unless I hit the Powerball)
We have a typical raised ranch with a 11 x 12 kitchen with not much cabinet space. I am putting our new side by side refrigerator where the back door off the kitchen was as I put a patio door off our dining room onto our deck and it seems sort of dumb to me to have another door 3 ft away. We will be gaining some more cabinet space that way and I am also going to put in an L-shaped peninsula with some base cabinets and wall cabinets above that.
Anyway, to make a long story short we have decided to go with Kraft Maid cabinets as they seem to be better built than the in-stock stuff. Sat with the guy at Lowes who plugged in my measurements into the computer and when he hit the total button I almost died. Over 10k for just white cabinets, nothing like Oak or Cherry, etc. WTF??? All the displays said around $2200 for a typical L-shaped 10x10 kitchen. I am not on a Cadillac budget for this, somewhere above a Pinto budget is more like it. We went over the item list and one price was wrong, $3700 for and end cap???
He had plugged in all the bells and whistles on the base cabinets so that really upped the price around the $6300 range. Finally got things down to around $3400 as we don't need the fancy ass pullout racks, etc. Almost felt like we were buying a car like when the salesman is trying to get you to go for all the options.
Anyone have experience with the Kraft Maid line of cabinets?
Will be taking down the soffits in the kitchen and patching in the drywall on the wall and ceiling where they were and then will be putting in a glue-up tile ceiling that looks like the old tin style ceilings and then crown molding too. New countertops, (laminate, can't swing Corian or granite!) Pretty much figuring that it will take most of the spring to do everything.
