Knock counts

The other day I noticed on a short blast that I had some knock counts (4) but no knock retard shown on the direct scan or scan master. What generates ignition retard ?

It's a little more complex than just a simple paragraph,but knock counts are duration and severity of knock event expressed as a count of 1 and the ECM calculates retard based on the pulse accumulator.And knock counts maybe a running total of knock incidents per session.

FWIW, my car generates 1-2 knock counts just cranking it over and applies no KR, yet the knock counts stay as displayed.

Thanks , it's starting to make sense, I didn't have all this info back in '86 with my first GN . Boy how things have changed after being out of the loop for 20 years !!
