What could be wrong inside a trans to allow a L/U convertor to slip when locked up. This convertor, in another trans, DOES NOT slip. I assume the pump. With a 600 psi gage taped to the winshield the trans maintains 230 psi all the way through the 1/4 mile. In one trans, this convertor shows 0 % slippage when locked. Put the same convertor in the problem trans and it shows 30% slippage. It does lock because rpm drops when switch is flipped but rpms climb back fast. Not being a trans expert, could the solenoid be leaking through just enough to not push the L/U valve all the way up. I assume the L/U is in one of the 2 positions, not half way. Open to any and all suggestions. Thanks

Russ,

It's my converter Lee is talking about. The solenoid is a 200. It locked last year I thought OK. I drove it tonite and had to flip the lock up switch a couple times to get it to engage. So maybe the solenoid is bad and you say should be replaced with a 700 solenoid.

Thanks,
Mike

Looks like Russ had the answer, given the variable behavior of the TCC.

Another possibility, if the converter has moved from one car to another as well as one transmission to another: Mike's car makes enough more power to drive through the clutch.

equal

For sake of argument, lets say both cars are @ the same power level.
We had the trans apart this past winter to check the direct clutches.
1 friction had a slight amount of black (burn ) on it. We replaced and reset the clearance. So no, the direct clutches are not slipping. Has anyone had the solenoid leak through enough to allow the convertor clutches slip? I guess a new 700 solenoid would be the next step. Never used a 700 solenoid. Is that the one that requires a washer under the mounting flange? Thanks

Yea Lee they need to be shimmed. If you get the univeral one they come with the whashers.
