I know nothing about trannys but maybe I can show this to the tranny mechanic when I go see him Monday. Car shifts into 2nd gear at 22 mph and into 3rd gear at 41 mph. I didn't notice this when I bought the car, but I found in the mechanic's notes to let off on the gas to allow it to upshift. It is an 87 GN, bought it well used but the tranny has been gone through by the prevous owner and I think it might have a shift kit and maybe ever a stall converter. What should the mechanic be looking for? One guy adjusted the tv cable and the shifts are real smooth, just late. Thanks.

if loosening the tv cable made it smoother and the shift pointsare still late i would suggest checking the tvlimit valve and the tv upshift valves for sticking, govrnor leakage at the governor o ring ,gasket ,body seperator plate or line leaking into the tv upshift passage ,.this would explain smoother gear changes with less tv and still late shifts.also make sure you have the correct valve body and governor and rear end ratio for the specific application.

Hey Chris- I was on the phone when you called and I can't call long distance from work. Anyway, I took the car to a tranny shop and he won't rebuild/replace just some parts. All or nothing. He said $1400 - $1700. Take it or leave it. Now what!!??? I found a receipt from the last owner- Modern Muscle 12" 3000 stall lock up converter $245.......Complete race ready trans. setup/overhaul $875........TCI race type trans shift kit $85 ....... Does this help? the mechanice must have been an ATR dealer, as most parts are from ATR. The mechanic also said somewhere that the owner was to let off on the gas to allow it to upshift. This doesn't seem to work, however. This is all I have on the tranny.

are you near mundeline illinois by any chance?i have a connection there that will be able to help.

Per mapquest it is 2 hours 57 minutes. If I drove that far, I would have to take the full day off of work, and I wouldn't be able to leave it there for 2 or 3 days. It would have to get fixed while I wait. doesn't sound good, does it? Can you give me the fellow's name and number so I could call him? The easiest thing might be to swap a known good tranny for mine- but i would be losing all the "goodies" in mine. But then again, I hate it the way it is.

Tranny fixed

While on vacation in Knoxville, Tenn., I went into a tranny shop (Advanced Transmission- ask for John) and left the car there for them to look at it. I then called Mike Kurtz at Centrury Transmission in Texas, who said to check the springs on the primary and secondaryweights, as sometimes they fall off or are taken off. Turns out he was right on the money. One spring was missing, and other spring had fallen off. total bill was $123, which was $90 for labor and rest for springs and tranny fluid. Thanks a lot Mike Kurtz! I'll put you on the "Good Guy" list.
