Its time for a mower and Ive been using a Scag and a Exmark both with 72 inch decks but its time for a personal one as these are company mowers. For some reason I like the looks of the Dixie Chopper. I plan on a 60 inch deck and have looked at all of them but never used the Dixie chopper, has anyone got any feedback on this? The John Deere seems to be just as pricey as the scag and exmark with the Dixie Chopper not far behind. $6500. Any thoughts on this would be great. I have a 2 acre lawn so 60" is the smallest I want to go. Also the Genrac engine seems to be a better engine but I have no experience with this. Any input would be great. Thanks

I would stay away from Dixie Chopper. I hear a lot of rumblings about the future of that company. Scag and JD make some great mowers. Find a dealer that will demo them on YOUR lawn. Only buy from a dealer that will take care of you in the future.

I sell commercial mowers like Hustler, Grasshopper, Cub Cadet, and Snapper. That is also the order in which I would buy a commercial mower for my personal use.

Well we bought the Scag from a JD dealer as that is what they sold cause the JD at the time were not selling. Now they sell JD mowers but no scag. 1 hour drive to get parts now. Maybe I should just buy the JD. At least they seem to stay around.

I sell new Ferris and Cub Cadet mowers at my business. The Ferris mowers have been great and a lot of my customers are replacing thier current fleet with them. They have a suspension on them that takes a lot of the rough ride away and therefor you can mow at a greater speed than before. For 2 acres you could probably go with thier 1500 series. The Cub Cadet line has quite a few good mowers for you application also. If you had any questions about anything, feel free to call me @ 713-667-5651 8-5 central m-f. I attend a lot of the Ferris and Cub seminars to keep up on this stuff. I dont have anything to gain, but would be glad to share what I know. Shawn

Which mower did he get and what can you tell me about the BadBoy mower. I just realized my neighbor works at a dealer that is 5 minutes away. I looked at a 757 JD today and $8-$9000 seems a little high.....

He got he $4495 ZT series one. I dont know what to say about it, except it is a very well built lawnmower that is tough. It has those little airbags on the front wheels to help with the rough terrain also. Go visit your friend and I'm sure he will let you try one out on demo.

For 2 acres, nearly any commercial version should last and run well for years. I only wish the Ransomes Bobcat was still available. That was the best mower I ever used. If you have trees or bushes to mow under, consider the extra money for a front deck model. It's worth the difference in time saved.

Look over the choices and see which is made of the thickest and heaviest material... That's probably your strongest mower.

Hustler and Ferris, I have never used. I have used a slew of others. For a single lawn that's well maintained, any commercial brand should do. I like Grasshopper these days. Also, around the south, Dixie Chopper is perhaps the #1 overall brand because they cut so quickly and seem to last. Problem is, a high end model from either will cost ya about 11K(diesel powered for GH) and you probably don't want to spend that much for a single yard. Of course, it may last as long as you do.;) The DC does come with a good warranty, btw.

Don't get a Dixie...I use one everyday for work and it tears up yards, there's basically no way to turn it and not tear up a yard with those damn mud tires...I like using my buddies Scag, but I have no experience with the others.

DixonZTR, Dixie, etc. are tough to "learn" because the wheels spin opposite directions to turn, but any zero turn radius mower will have that problem. Try using a slower motion when turning around. That should help. For me, a front deck is always the best choice, so ztr's were never my favorite.

I looked at the BadBoy mower this morning and I guess its OK but for what I need it was $6400. Called the JD dealer and got a price of $7700 for the 737 and $8100 for the 757. Both with a 60" deck one has a 23 and the other a 25hp Kawasaki. I think Im leaning that way now, Ive had JDs for years on the farm and its hard to stray away. I also have a couple early ones I restored and dont drive. Go figure. Lawnmower has better paint than the GN. lol Thanks for all the responses.

What was different about the badboy? I am no lawnmower expert for sure and would like to know your opinion on why teh JD was better at 1k more.

Jason

if it were me i would go with the scag. my father has a scag and loves it. my uncle bought a new mower last year and looked at the jd but did not buy it because he said it had to much of a rough ride. my uncle bought a ferris as it has shocks on all four wheels and has a much better ride. dave

Im not really a Briggs and Stratton fan and In 20 years Im sure JD will still be here. I will give the Badboy props for simplicity and tough build quality. I guess Im just a JD fan in the end.

So the motor was the deciding factor? thanks!

And do you by chance know which brand of mower is yellow with the levers between your legs instead of coming over your legs? I'm sorry for the brief description, but thats the only way I can decribe it.

Jason

Scag has a mower like that, but it's orange and only has one lever with a T-handle.

Dixon had centered handles way back when, but the mowers were blue and white.

For my money, GrassHopper still gets the win. JD equipment is like buying a Cadillac when a Chevrolet would do. It's not much better, but it sure is overpriced.

If your yard has any steep hills on it, do not go with a ZTR mower. If going up or down a hill and one of the tires looses grip, the mower will spin and slide all the way down! I found out the hard way.

Hey Jason,

That is a Walker. Made out in Colorado. Their Territory rep keeps stopping by and wanting me to become a dealer for them. But after looking one over in the shop real good we politely told him no thanks.
