Hi guys, I was considering moving to connecticut (south western part of the state) to get a job with a bearing company down there in fairfield where I just had an interview. How do you connecticut guys like living in the state? What are good and bad points about living there. I hear the cost of living can be high in some areas, just wanted your opinions in case I have to move down there. thanks

mike

Fairfield is a nice area. I dated a girl that was from there, but lived on this side of the state, so we went there a few times. It can be expensive though.

My opinion as an outsider living here? It sucks. It's boring and there isn't much to do. The best part about it is you're reasonably close to interesting places (NYC, Boston, NED).

I don't like it here, I'm moving away when my stint is done.

Have been in CT my whole life, almost 50. Like anywhere else it has it's good and bad points. Traffic pretty much sucks everywhere, high taxes, lousy roads, 3/4 of the population can't drive to save their lives. Winters are too long.

Good points, lots of car shows and cruise nites, nice shoreline. can't think of much else.:D

Don't live there ,,but have visited and from an outsider that state is beautiful especially during the season change.

I've lived here since a few years after graduating college in 1996. I lived in southern Massachussets right after college and I hated that more than Connecticut. I've lived all over CT. I lived in the southeast, the northwest, and now I live in the southwest in Shelton which is at the northern edge of Fairfield County.

The traffic sucks down here in Fairfield County. The Merritt and 95 are two of the most traveled roads in the country and it shows. One accident brings everything to a grinding halt. The only form of public transportation that is available here is metro north which overall is expensive and somewhat unreliable and available only in a limited area. Living near the train usually costs a lot more unless you live in Bridgeport (don't live there).

The cost of living in Fairfield County is astronomical. We bought our house in Shelton for $320k and that was a decent deal. It's a five bedroom two bath colonial with an acre of land and about 2000 square feet of living space. It was appraised at $400k after one year of us living in it. We did nothing to the house in that time other than paint the interior walls and have the hardwood sanded.

Which brings me to the only good thing about Fairfield County, the real estate. Unless you buy in Bridgeport your home investment is almost guaranteed to go up in value. My relatives bought in Greenwich back in the 70s and their home value has gone from $200,000 to over $3 million. Renting down here sucks ass, it is expensive and crowded. If you plan on spending more than five years here I would buy as soon as possible.

The weather here is terrible. Winter seems to go on forever and summer is hot and humid. Spring and fall seem to pass with extreme rapidity.

All in all I'm looking to go further south as soon as possible, but like I said it could be worse, I could still live in Mass.

Don't take a job that puts you in Fairfield County unless you are making over $50k or more. The cost of living will eat you alive.

WOW!! that sounds alot like virginia!!!!:D

Remember you can get anywhere in the State of CT in an hour and a half. That includes stopping at 2 or 3 Dunkin Donuts. :)

Not during the previously mentioned traffic jams however.

4 seasons, casinos, food, shoreline, occasional open space inland, and very high taxes and 5 heavily freeloading poor cities to pay for.

Fairfield county is $$$$ to live in.

Way too many poor drivers too, but not as bad as NY and Mass.

:p

Lots of crooked politicians. Former governor sentenced to one year in the big house for accepting kickbacks. Two mayors of major cities already in prison, one for the same thing and the other one a child molestor.

Screwed up emissions inspections.

Forgot, we do have SalvageV6 in our state as well as SHANE and KLHammet aka OTTO.:D

Best part about CT...Me.;) oh yeah, and we don't have funny accents like our neighbors to the north.

I worked in Fairfield for almost 6 months and then on and off for another year back in '95-'96 I was there all thru the summer, wasn't bad. I was working for a Grocery brokerage firm, Daymon, they share the same office complex as Playtex Bra's..lots of ladys there, right across the street from Conair. Overall I didn't mind it, but didn't care too much for the winters...I stayed in Stamford, and the streets pretty much got rolled up after 10pm, not alot of things to do right in the city of Stamford.

I worry about a state that allows one Jim "Platehead" Rome to reside there:)

I think you should stay away from him whenever possible as he is bad news.

Oooh!! Oooh!! I'm home on leave in Michigan. What did Rowland get? I'm too lazy to check out The Day.

I'm really gonna have to meet you other CT guys one of these days. I'm tired of trying to find someone around here to shoot the breeze with.

He got one year AND a day. SOB got off pretty easy if you ask me. If it was you or me we would have gone away for a long time. Probably had the judge on his payroll too. Was telling everyone he is broke and couldn't afford to send his poor kids to college. Funny how he forgot to mention that he had almost $500,000 in some mutual fund. Someone has already stepped up and said they will give him money towards his kids' education.

Yeah, no kidding. Haven't the last three mayors of Waterbury turned out to be some sort of dirtbag?

Screwed up emissions inspections.

I can't believe they are putting that back into play. At this point I have a hard time believing it is anything other than a money making scheme for the state.
