Looking at doing internal work...

Hey im looking at doing some internal work on my engine, like cams and what ever needs to be done.. Anyone could you give me advice on what to do or what to get.. Im looking at makeing more power but without brakeing things when I do. If anyone has advice on what I should do that would be great.
