I'm going to look at a 99' Ford F-150 Ext. Cab 4x4 with the 5.4L V8 Triton engine and automatic transmission...it has 80k miles on it...anybody wanna give me some feedback about this truck? is it a good towing truck for my GN? how is it on gas and stuff?

Don, I had a 2000 F-150 regular cab flareside for a few years with the 5.4 in it. That thing was a complete dog. I doubt if it would pull anything very well, but I guess I've seen worse. It got 16 MPG on the highway with a bed cover on it. Sux! Next time I buy a truck, I'm getting a GMC.

welp our work truck is a reg cab 4x4 with the 5,4
gas mileage is bad!!!
but it does pull alot of weight.
a 2 horse trailer with horses in it no problem
and ive towed a big water tank type trailer across town no problem
so its not a problem to tow a car just itll be very thirsty
hth

Gm product (Chevy or GMC truck) gets much better fuel economy (around 20mpg/hwy) and will tow just as much.. F150 vs 1500 series..

Gm's hold their resale value a little better as well.

:)

My '00 F150 has a 5.4 and gets 14mpg in the city and 20mpg on the highway. It's not a 4X4, so maybe that makes a difference. As far as towing, I've pulled plenty of cars on a flatbed without any problem. I ran it at the track once for grins and put down a 15.99@83mph. That's definately nothing special, but considering all the Chebbys were running 17's I left happy. The 4.6 makes the F150 a complete waste of a truck.

i have a 02 ext cab short bed 2wd 150 with a 4.6, had bought a super duty with the 5.4, and for financial reasons i ended up with the 150 instead, i had traded in a 92 5.0 2wd, thought that i had really gotten myself in a pickle by getting a smaller engine, but it pulled my 20 foot trailer way better then the 5.0 ever did, and if you look at the 5.4 vs the 4.6 power numbers, the 5.4's torque comes on low but bleeds off fast, and but its max hp is around 5400, which is a decent pulling engine but not a nice everyday driver, the 4.6's torque and hp are lined up at around 5400 which you v8 guys know it what makes for a more enjoyable engine, i think that alot of people would be surprised by what the 4.6 can do, i sure was, can't be that bad of an engine if its in the mustangs, but thats how i see it, i think that the weight of the truck has to be accounted for too, for every hunderd pounds of weight, you can take that off off what you can pull, so a 5.4 4wd might be just as much as a dog as a 2wd 4.6, .8 liter isn't all that much, but thats again how i see it.

I've got a 97 F-150 with the 5.4 automatic. I am a GM man but I got a good deal on the truck. I have pulled a tandem axle car trailer with several different cars and it pulled them with no problem. I put a flowmaster muffler and an Airaid cold air intake on it and picked up a few ponies, but you won't win any races against a Chevy. I will say though that it has been a trouble free truck and with 78K miles on the clock Ive never done anything but change the oil. I say it's still better than a Dodge:D

I'm thinking of picking up a truck or SUV, primarilly looking a Dakota or Durango, definately V8 models. Any problems towing a GN with one of these?

Yes, inferior brakes and stability compared to a "true" full size truck/suv..
