Tried removing nuts on the escutcheon trim piece with the flat screw driver method and found it to work only on some of the nuts. I was afraid to use this method to screw the nuts back on to a new escutcheon because I couldn't get the nut to screw down evenly.
Thought about using a hex key and drilling a hole but don't have a drill press, so I modified my 1/4" bit screw driver. I just used a file and slowly work the six sides down to fit snug inside the fastener nut, following the inside hex pattern where 1/4" bits sit.
Now you can put even pressure on the nut while screwing it down onto the escutcheon.
