MAF operation, good or bad?

I have an 84 engine using an 86 MAF. The engine starts and runs with the MAF unplugged. I am using a stock 87 chip. If I plug it in the engine will stumble and stall. Will the engine run with it unplugged? So what does this tell me? Thanks

If it runs better with the MAF unplugged, likely a bad MAF. ECU goes into limp mode with the MAF unplugged and runs off the CALPAC chip, if memory serves.

I was thinking that too but there is no calpack chip plugged in.
