Maf sensor question..

Sorry for the dumb question. When I take out the rubber elbow that connects the maf to the air box, it runs like complete crap. I never went down the road like this, only when I was working on stuff. Is this normal?

It has been years since I dealt with a Hot air intake. My advice is make sure there are no leaks between the MAF and the throttle body. Brad
