Major VISTA Help plz

Vista won't download any exe files.
I have reset IE to it's default settings and I even did a Restore back to about 2 weeks ago but it still won't work (that's the farthest I can restore back to).

I've tried downloading the exe files to different folders, to the desktop and even my external hard drive but it still won't download it.

I even used my work computer to download the files onto a jump drive then tried to copy them onto my computer but it won't allow it to happen.

I turned off the firewall but still no go.

Sometimes when I try to download it onto the desktop I can see the file icon "blink" on the desktop but then it disappears as if Vista didn't like it so it deleted it.

Please help. As a last resort I am getting ready to re-install it all but I will lose all my programs and have to re-install them which I don't want to do.

If you are going to wipe it, reinstall XP.

Even Windows 7 Pro comes with XP just in case....which shows you the faith MS has in their new product.

It sounds like a program is deleting them for you. What AV or spyware programs are you using?

Blowing it away, reinstalling and then upgrading to W7 would be the best anyways. You could just perform a clean upgrade/install but, you don't want any of your old stuff sticking around if you are having issues with it.

The inclusion of XP with W7 is so businesses that do not have the infrastructure or trained IT staff can still revert to XP until the OS environment for the company as a whole can move forward. Home machines really don't have the option for XP. I am looking forward to pushing 7 out here. it has been nothing but improvments in speed and managability from my side of things.

Thnx but changing from Vista is not in the funds at this time and I'd rather get this going w/o wiping it clean.
I wiped it clean back in Sept and it was a PITA getting the video drivers working properly but if I have to I will do it again but I just don't want to.

It sure is working for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had a couple "freeze up" glitches during install, but once past them everything went smoothly and it's working great!!

And once Bob rolled out the new Powerlogger win 7 drivers, now PL's working again too!!

Currently the only virus protection is what ever came with Vista. I tried downloading AVG but naturally it wouldn't download it.

Windows Firewall and Windows Defender are the only included programs. Check their settings to see if anything is out of whack. Maybe turn them both off.

If your copy of Windows is legit, do a search for Microsoft Antivirus and download theirs. Its free.

I turned off the firewall (still didn't help) but can't figure out a way to turn off Defender.

It's legit I just purchased Vista in Sept when Vista wouldn't reboot and I had to reformat the computer. Remember, software doesn't come with a computer when you buy it so I had to buy new Vista disks to fix it in Sept.

Remember I can't download anything to even fix it.

It seems that there is a setting that is not allowing it to download the files to the computer..

So far it's looking like I know what I'll be doing over xmas break..

Download a different browser onto a USB stick on another computer and install it and see if it will download EXE's. IE is way too big brother-ish.

Go into internet options, security, custom level and check the file download section. It may have the "disable" button selected.

But it doesn't sound like an I.E. issue since you can't even transfer the files onto your computer from a thumb drive.

That's the first thing I did and it's now Enabled and I lowered all my security levels to Minimum. I found a way to disable Defender and that didn't help either.
I'm also leaning towards that it's a Vista issue not an IE issue.

I've read on the internet where others have had this same problem but so far I haven't found anyone that has fixed it.
