Dont ground anything!!! just leave switch (3rd gear) out. Ypou will have to toggle any time. It is alot simpler than you are making it.

O.K. The red wire comes out from the case connector to the selonoid, (+). The other wire, black (-), coming out from the selonoid goes to the 3rd gear switch, (gov). So, I just cap it and not ground it at all?

Click on the link below and see my schematic...

Ok ground the black wire or negative side of the solenoid to a VB bolt. . Connect switched power to the red wire. That is it. Leave the gear switch alone.

The case connector has two wires coming out from it. The red wire, (+), and a white wire that attaches to the other side of the 3rd gear switch. This white wire comes out from the ECM. See link.

Since I am removing the fuse from the ECM, (I'm going to a non-electronic carb and a non-CCC HEI distributor system), I can pretty much leave the white wire attached to the 3rd gear switch.

I'm still not clear on the toggle thing. If it's toggled 'on' will it automatically lock at a certain speed and unlock at a another, (other than when I apply the brake).

Look at this page a click on Fig.40, looks like 12V to the purple wire should do it. Diagram is for a 83 Monte SS that came with the 350C trans.
