manually shift into first gear

have a stock 87. transmission works fine but won't shift into first gear, manually. any suggestions

I'm going to suggest that your shifter is not properly adjusted. Are you pushing in the release button fully on the shifter handle, then trying to put it in first, is it getting hung up in the detent for 2nd gear? How about if you also try to turn the steering column when trying to put it into first?
