Method for measuring front unit end play on 2004R

What method do you use for measiuring this without the special tool? Is the shaft threaded inside to pull up on? How do you grab the shaft to pull it up and then where do you position the dial indicator? This is with the assembly still inside the case. Thanks

That's the low end, there are three. Low/ center/ pump

I'll have to look through my pix again and see. I'm sure I measured as I changed all three selectives for thicker pieces and put a thicker .080 bushing in on the rear of the sun shell .
