Saw a 86 Monte SS on side of road $995-or BO.

The SS was ok looking for a 100k mile car.
But motor tired.
Took for a ride in SS with Board member Pronto who was with me.

What a hunk O Crap this engine combo is. Any TB with same milage would wipe the SS all over the road..

Guy who owned came out of house with Beer bottle & Beer breathe at 11:30 am
Kept say make an offer... $2- anyone :D

I had an 87 Monte Super Slow

yup slow, and a friends GN was the one that made me want mine

'86 SS Monte What shape is it in? I have a kid looking for a car right now. It'd be good to put him in a G Body at least! When he wants to go fast...he can ride in mine:cool:
Jim

I had one brand new in 87 thought is was a bad ride then, what a pig it really was. I did the norm gutted the cat, chip and punched the carb out and leaned it out a little. Still a pig.

Gm should have stuffed the Iroc 5.7 Tuned port in it. It would have helped. The 305 Carb engine was just a piggy:D :D

"ya but we have a better suspension" is what all the monte ss owners cry when gn guys rag on how slow those 305s are. LC2 or better suspension, which would i pick...heh he he he he.

Better suspension?? There's a diff?? How much?

My father's got an 86 SS. That 305 with the quadra-junk was a real PITA. But with the help of TPI, it's a nice car now. Can't touch the GN, but a real big help.

BTW, not trying to hijack this thread, but if anybody knows of a clean 86 DS door.. please PM me. Thanks.

They're typical of 99.9% of all GM cars built since the '60's - all 'show' and no go. BUT, the good news is - all it takes is an engine swap. My son's '85 MCSS runs 12.05 on pump gas and Nitto's. Granted, a LOT of pump gas. :( Gotta admit, the MCSS's are sinister looking, too!

The engine was not responsive at all. Fist sized rot in the door sills and the pass side rear wheel well looked like a candidate for Clearasil. To get it for $500 and use it in the 1 on 1 roundy round drags would be ok. Rustorama resto would cost too much + any performance upgrades. Might be good for someone that has a wrecked one and combine the best of both if they got the time and tools.

If $500 didn't get it maybe a 30 pack would push him over the edge! Heck, part the thing out andd turn that car into $1,500! especially if it's a posi. Drew

It really is an upside down world. If you listed a ttype for $5000 or a monte for $5000, I bet you anything the phone calls on the monte would be 10 to 1 over the Buick.

IMO that just proves what Ive been saying for years.. People would rather buy a car that "looks" racey even if they had to push the thing rather than buy a car that ran like a raped ape but looked bad. Not to say the Buicks look bad at all but if its got shiney paint, shiney wheels, and flowmasters but runs 18s in the quarter you can sell it in no time. On the other hand if its in primer or somewhat tattered but runs 8s you'll set on it for a while till the right buyer comes along  .

IMO thats why you see so many camaros, vettes, etc painted "resale red". Wanna make a buck on a turd of a car? Paint it red, put shiney wheels on it, and put a for sale sign in it as some idiot with money will be along shortly ;) .

This is NASCAR country so the MCSS still fetches decent money here even for high milage/worn stockers. Roachy ones can be had for ~2.5k but they will need a complete restoration. IMO the MCSS could have been the Impy SS of the day if they would have came with the TPI engine or better yet the LC2 but lets not forget this is GM and those engines would have made WAY too much sense for either to have been available in the MCSS.

Hey littlesixsteve and Pronto-
Where abouts in NH? I go up to Portsmouth everyonce in a while, and I'm sure I could scrape together $500 for a winter car to put the GN away. I used to have a 88 MCLS, I still have a soft spot for them. Let me know please.

Yep, I bougth my 85 MCSS soley on its style even though I knew first hand it was no where near a performance car. It runs out great as it is geared pretty low it has no usable power over 4500 rpm and only gets 14 mpg. But every since H.S. I wanted a MCSS silver w/ t-tops and finally bought one 2 1/2 years ago for $3750. It had fresh paint, straight body, clean inter., and clean under the hood w/106k. But I'm gonna sell her as I'm gonna pick up my TB on Thursday which is also one of my dream cars. This way I can have great style and some kick a** performance. There's nothing like thumpin' V-8s than with less cylinders! Thats why I also love my SVO so much!
There is a substitue for cubic inch, its called technology!

I am probably in the minority here... since I am selling the Buick and keeping my SS.

But, then again I dumped everything factory in the SS anyway. Because it was a dog... :D

12.7s on 87 octane is every boosted car's dream.

Sure it only gets ~15mpg with the 4.56s... but, the exhaust note turns more heads than a whistle. ;)

It's in Manchester, NH and here's the dudes #603-930-1645. He was saying that we were the 3rd ones looking at it and it would be gone by Monday. It's snowed overnight so its a good be it will be sitting right there for the duration of the winter.
His buddy and him have some kind of salvage yard or vehicle recovery service so I be they got it out of a back yard somewhere and put a used battery in it to sell. Probably payed $50 for it.

Dig the Monte SS's...

The Monte SS is a good looking car and has some things that our TR's should have - like factory gauges and a complete set of body bushings. And if the absolutely-necessary TR-drivetrain swap is too complicated or too expensive a built block Chevy fits just as well.

I have to agree with Motorhead Mike. If I had to do it all over again, I'd keep the SS. My 86 SS did 15.5@89mph (or similar) but handled worlds better over my TR and had an awesome growl to it. The dashboard is not embarassing to look at and the center console actually is usable without a pillow or second console attached to it. The Monte SS suspension was F41 (or F40, I always forget) and was designed for performance. The TR suspension was a luxury sport type. My 86 SS with 90k miles on it had original shocks and bushings and handled like it was on rails. I also think the SS is better looking.

Can't beat the TR on speed or economy though, and the sissy rear end in the SS is a joke.

haha, SS's handled so good b/c they couldnt get enuf speed built up in the straightaway to make any real hard cornering maneuvers. ahahaha
