Glad to see that you care enough to really learn and not just pass :-) In my opininion, it all depends on your long term goals. In my area, private EMS, or EMS only is a dead end career. If you want long term stability with good benefits/retirement etc, then Fire Service is the way to go. Find a good Fire Service that incorporates Fire with EMS. You are probably younger then I am (I'm 37) and in hindsight, I wish I had gone into Nursing to begin with and worked in a trauma center and done EMS on the side. EMS is not a job that you can do indefinately. It's too hard on you with the physical demands and the odd hours etc. If you are young and just really dig the prehospital aspect, then get the EMT-P out of the way, go to Fire School and find a good paying Fire Service/EMS job and your set.

I decided, after 11 years to go to Nursing school which is what I'm doing now. At least with nursing, you are never without career options. I can still work EMS as I'll never let my EMT license go and then when I'm too old and decrepit to do it anymore I'll have Nursing to fall back on.

the deparment i want in on you HAVE to be a paramedic and a firefighter, no way around it unless you are a fire fighter and going to medic school, or a medic going to fire school. the deparment also works 24/on 72/off... good deal to me... my neighbor is a Division Chief, and he talked me into this, and he's been doing it for about 10 years... so, if i am in his posistion in about 10 years, i will be super happy.
