Yesterday in my thread about the failing hard drive i stated that it was fixed ......WRONG!! I still am getting this weird chirp/clik/freeze thing going on. Event viewer shows nothing going wrong. OS is Win2k pro. The sound is coming from the HD. I have substituted a different HD and it still does it. Bad IDE controller? I dont want to buy a new PC unless I know this one cant be fixed. Thanks.

do you have a fan on the cpu chip? or possible on the video card chip?

it might be overheating.

Evil_gn, i think you may be on to something. I opened the case again and the fan for the cpu and the cooling fins on the processer were packed with dust! I blew the whole thing out with compressed air after taking the fan off. We'll see if it helps, so far so good.

Ttype83, I ran seagates diskwizard online diagnosis software and the disk checks OK. If you didnt see the other thread, this is a brand new 80 gig seagate drive. Thanks.

I've had this problem more than once. It could be a power supply issue. Take a voltmeter (DC) and probe the connector to the hard drive. Yellow should be a solid 12+ V and red should be 5+ (I may have the colors backwards).
When I first turned on the computer, it was showing a good 12V, but the 5V line was only 4.8. As the computer would access the drive the voltage would drop more, and when it hit 4.5 the drive heads would click.

Listen your problem i can almost guarntee is the dust build up , those noises your normally here are the fans , you can on most processors change the fan, open up the case and turn on the computer listen carefully to see where the noise is coming from, depending on how new your system is and everything. iam a pc tech for the city of new york i deal with this junk everyday :)

hmmm chirping from the HD and freeze up is not a good thing, some sectors of your hard-drive maybe gone, thus the chirping and freezing , save any valuable info now that you can and get a new HD to install.

This HD is brand new. It is still acting up though, wouldnt boot up just sat there with this real soft rhythmic " beep-beep-beep " sound coming out of it. finally After about 5 trys it booted up. I guess I'll just use it till it dies for good.:(

Just because it's new does not mean that it good, I have replaced at least 5 HD's in systems over the last 8 years that were new out of the box.

Back up your data and clean it..dust,dust,dust. Check your volts like granatl said and run a low level format on the drive, this is one of a few things that will let you know if the HD is good or not.
Seagate should have one for download from their site. Beep,Beep, Beep ...is not the HD ...click,click,grind is ...Check to make sure that your Memory chips are still seated good and your video card.... My money for the beeps in the Mem chips, pull them and put them back in.

Its not the kind of beep you think, its not a system error beep. Its kind of a cross between a chirp and a beep and when it does it, the HD light flashes on at the same time. I have an idea that the problem may be from when i installed the new HD. See, the old one was definitely on the way out, tons of "harddisk has bad block" errors in event viewer. When i installed the new drive, I used the disk that came with it and it transfered the files from the old HD to the new one and i believe some of the system files may be corrupted. Does this seem like a possibilty? I don't know enough about computers to know for sure. I will try a clean install of win2k tonight after the above mentioned suggestions and see if the situation improves. Thanks for all the help guys. I'm tryin to avoid buying a new PC!:D
