Yesterday I took a ride to a friend's house 20 miles away. Took back roads the way there, mostly in drive, put it in overdrive a few times where I could do 45. A few hours later, took the highway home 55 to 65 the whole way in OD, it downshifted to 3rd pass a few people. Got off the highway, put it in D and it wouldn't come out of first. Pulled over, and pulled the TV cable 20 times, still wouldn't come out of 1st gear. No matter what position the gear selector was in. what did I do? Fluid level was good and smelt fine. Trans felt fine the whole ride. I don't think it's the governor spring.
Please help!!!

pressures

I just got this trans back in the car after breakin the direct drum, so I've been taking it easy, and yes I have pressure readings. see http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/transmission-talk/259674-pressure-readings-after-rebuild.html. I will be away all week, but will check the governor sping next weekend. The only reason I didn't think it could be the governor spring is because it was shifting fine on the highway. I got off the highway, stopped at a red light, then wouldn't shift out of first. No burnouts or high rpm antics. Never revved it past 4 grand.

Before (working fine):
MinTV MaxTV
P 150 190
R 225 225
N 150 200
D4 160 215
D3 160 200
D2 200 200
D1 200 200
Trans was hot.

After (stuck in first):
MinTV MaxTV
P 160 180
R 250 260
N 160 175
D4 170 175
D3 170 170
D2 210 210
D1 210 200
Trans was cold when these readings were taken. Solid engagement in each position. Reverse works fine. Engine braking only in D1, not in D3 or D4. Fluid is not burnt or discolored. I really hope it is the spring...
Thanks.

Your Min TV,s are way too high plus there is very little or no change from Min TV to Max TV. Most likely the TV valve is stuck.

Thanks Mikester, I see what you mean, but it was working when I first put it in and the pressures haven't changed very much. I'll let you know what I find next weekend. I thought the trans starts in 2nd gear with high pressures?
Thanks.

Before dropping the VB try pulling the TV cable 20 plus times letting it snap back and see if it frees teh TV valve

I tried that right when it started. The car was off, should the car be running when I pull the cable?

spring fell out

I finally dropped the pan and found the governor spring lying in the bottom. I’m going to pin it in place with the 8-32 plastic screw method.

I also noticed a lot of sediment in the bottom of the pan. Would any clutches get burned up by losing the governor spring? The fluid looks and smells fine, just a lot of sediment.

Recently replaced the direct drum (see pic) with one from another trans. Could the sediment be the new drum wearing in?? Or is it destroying the 2nd gear band? I would thing the fluid would smell burnt if it was destroying clutches?

Do I change the fluid and filter and drive it till it dies?

I'm still not happy with my pressures.

I'm considering pulling the trans and going through it with a fine tooth comb and CK's manual. The friend that has helped me fix it the past rebuilds trannys all day for a living and perhaps measures by feel too often.

Your line pressure is wayyy too high even for park at Idle 150 WOW!!! I am surprised you dont hear the pump slapping back and forth with that much pressure..

Sediment in the bottom of the pan is normal as long as it's not excessive. Normal wear from the steels, clutch disks, and band. Is the picture of the direct drum the one you have in the trans? It doesn't have the correct return spring assembly in it for a BRF trans.

I don’t know what the trans was from originally. I added a CZ valve body and governor and CK calibration kit. I believe there are 10 and 16 spring versions of the return spring assembly. I plan to put a 16 spring in it. The picture was what was in the trans, I assume the replacement was the same.
