Okay,

Thanks for all the help so far. This is a 2-part question continuing from my first post...

Help with a “STALE 87 GN” http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=147131

Okay, I'm making progress. Drained the gas, changed the fluids, replaced the battery. No problem, I now have the car running. Starts fine, idles fine, sounds fine. I have not changed the plugs yet. I’ll do that is the next day or so.

One point I want everyone to know. This GN is not even close to being stock. It has had a lot of upgrades over the years. It is a high 10-second car. I have a PILE of receipts that may shed light on all that has been done to it.

1st question,

After it sits and idles for about 1 or 2 minutes it starts smoking heavily. I took it out for a 2-mile drive and it smoked immediately at all stop signs. I assume it smokes while I’m driving. I can’t tell while I’m moving. It is a blue/white smoke so I'm assuming it is fuel. It causes the typical watery burning eyes. It will drive you out of a two-car garage in less than 1 minute. The exhaust tips are also very wet.

I was told it did smoke “a little” when it was parked 3 or 4 years ago. Who knows what they mean by “a little”. I say it smokes A WHOLE LOT now.

So… any idea to what this smoking problem is or how to figure it out???

2nd question

During the 2-mile drive I went on I got the turbo to “spool up” a few times. Builds boost, sounds good, no problem. I did not push it hard at all!!!

This may be normal, I don’t know. Each time I get off the gas to stop boost the turbo makes more noise when it shuts down than I would think it would. It’s not a “bad noise” it’s a whirling wind type noise. No metal sounds or screeching of any kind. It’s just louder than I would expect it to be.

So… is this turbo sound normal or do I have a problem here???

Once again thanks for all your help.

#1, does the smoke smell like gas or oil? I would expect the injectors to be questionable after sitting with gas for so long. The smoke can also be oil from failing turbo bearings among other possible sources. Another thought is to replace the O2 sensor and verify that the chip matches the injectors as well as determine the type of chip.

#2, the noise is normal. Some call it "flutter" or surge (although surge is really another story).. It's normal and you can hear it better when the stock air cleaner is removed for a better flowing unit. It's the sound of pressurized air passing back thru the compressor when you close the throttle and it has nowhere to go.

Blue smoke is oil. Make sure no oil is dripping out of the breathers onto the headers. Make sure the pcv valve is doing its job. If I dont have mine hooked up, the blow by out of the breathers chokes me while I drive. Check to see how much blow by you have. It could just be bad valve seals, but I would do a compression/leakdown test to check the rings. Check the pressure, then squirt a good amount of motor oil inside the cylinder, and run the test again to see if the numbers improve. If they do, its bad rings. Check the turbo bearings as well. Also, check to make sure the turbo oil drain line is clear and flows ok. If its not draining, the oil can back up straight into the turbo.
