Is anyone running just the cat converter on an intercooled car, if so is it really quite?

Would there be a downside if the cat converter (3" single exhaust) is moved to just forward of the axle? I'm still trying to quell the dreaded drone but so far I haven't been very sucessful. I now have a cut out just past the end of the downpipe and I'm willing to lose a few ponies on the street due to the restriction of the converter and in the name of peace and quite. I'm talking stock exhaust quite. I can always open the dump on race day.

Has anyone thought about building their own muffler(s)? I believe if I had a welder handy I'd give it a try, can't be too hard. Stainless steel wool can be bought at McMaster-Car, and a stick of tubing can be bought at most part houses.

I tried the cat only idea, and it was too quiet, to me, and when I went to a set of straight thurs, it was really apparent about how restrictive it was. Too look thur it at a light source it didn't look to be plugged up either.

If you move it too far back it won't get hot enough, and the chem reaction won't be right, and allow it to plug up the matrix, with carbon.

The circle track crowd has some interesting muffler types. Basically they're just a large corkscrew, I think they might be worth trying.

Quiet with a min of back pressure is *always* about muffler size (larger being better), and dampening volume (again bigger is better). If you want both, you'll have to find room to do it, IMO.

Yep, the corkscrew, that's what I'm running (single) and it does quell the sound and drone but not near enough for me and the wife.

Guess my idea of building a "super" :) muffler may not sound to bad (pun intended).

Put a fuel cell in the trunk, and you'd have all sorts of room for the "super" muffler.
