I am not crazy about the idea of him driving around on a rice bike or any bike on the street. He has trail bike experince since 11 years old but that means chit on the street.. Drivers in our parts have thier heads up thier arse and 1/2 come from GRUMPY's state LOL

He wants to buy NEW.. I think it is a leftover 09 Yamaha R6???? $8k
they want to charge him 9% intrest & no or low money down.

I think it is a raw deal.

I prefer he buy a used bike 1st time out for street. Maybe spend up to $3k

Any suggestions from the street riders out there?

is any of your money being used in this deal? your credit?
if not, then it's not your concern.

Nope none of my money, but its my house he lives in.

I like the idea of him building credit but he has plenty of college loans that will come due when he is done.

I did sign for his silverado & technically it is mine but he makes the payments.
He is trying to pay it off early.

9%...fail

bikes and 21 year olds don't mix.

I know!

Told him we have a crappy short season up here. Maybe 4 good months & 2 so so months. with 6 months downtime..

He is trying to sell me on it gets good gas milage.. I said go out and buy an old s10 4cyl 5 speed for under 1k... You can at least drive it year round & get decent milage.

A friend of mine at work has r6 and a Gsx-r. After two years on the road both bikes were race prepped and now he does not drive on the street. I had gsx-r and ended up getting rid of it. To many crazies out there including me. Every time I got on it my brain crawled down my spine to my azz. I have close family friends that are control riders for nesba and they all have street bikes but they leave the hotdog riding for the track. I would not get an r6 for my first street bike. I would buy a used 500 and let him get used to it then buy something faster. That r6 is alot of bike for a new street rider. I know his friends will laugh if he pulls up on a 500 but who cares.May be a year on the road will cure him to take the bike to the track where he can open it up on a closed course and have some real fun.Make sure he reads this last part.WEAR A HELMET. Good luck and be careful

Nope!!

"He is trying to sell me on it gets good gas milage"...
NOT w/ her "tail twisted", it won't.:D

21y/o, hot bike, and the reasoning behind the purchase, is gas mileage...
Was talking w/ my bud about the costs associated w/ his hot Honda..A major expense is tires! Most road bikes like his, are up for tires about every 7k miles.
Your kid will be looking for them @ <2000.

NEGLECT the tires, and "buy the farm".

BAD choice for transportation and college....

Since he's working this summer start charging him room and board. That might squeeze his loose money that's burning a hole in his pocket. He should be more concerned with paying his school loan. He didn't want to take my Burgman for a ride but a sport bike is too alluring but you know they are way to fast. Hate to see something stupid happen...

+ I am one of them:p. I see them all the time flying down the highway and around the side streets.. Sorry I have very little compassion when they do go down. I know I know all bike riders are not like that BUT just calling it how I see it. Now everyone know's I am an ass but NO way would I let him have a bike . If he gets crazy (I guarantee he will do a little "show us what it can do") an gets hurt .. well you know the consequences.

too young for that bike, period. He'll probably not want to hear that but I say don't let him do it. Poor judgement, adrenaline and a fast bike can lead to disaster. A dualsport is way more fun, better mpg and way more versatile.

Has he ridden before and does he have a valid MC license for your state?? My recommendation- MSF Course (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) IF he hasn't had it. 21 years old and a R6 is a potential lethal combo: testosterone and 120 RWHP! Most metric bikes of 600cc and up are ballistic missles. Used is a better deal due to depreciation of new and since he may crash at some point. Squids riding on the street like they are on a road race course give all the rest of us riders a bad name. MOST motorcycle accidents are the result of the other person usually pulling out in front of the MC. Even with skills, some accidents are unavoidable. If he has to have a bike, please reinforce wearing gear all the time on the street to include a full face Snell approved helmet, armour reinforced pants and jacket, full boots, and good full gloves. Yes, he would need to wear this even in the heat! Better heat rash than road rash.....

Get him a used LS1 guide... bikes and 21 year olds don't mix.

Yep. They don't call young kids with sport bikes squids for nothing.

For those that dont know, they call young riders on these bikes squids because when the ems people arrive at their accident scene, the remains usually look like a squid.

hello people; I think that's a tuff call. I mean you should know your kid by now. I don't have any so I really should say nothing but if you have a hardworking one something special is great. Then the age factor kicks in and there's where the problem is. You might get him on a track where it's controled but there's still a risk factor as he's got experiance.
tuff call

My first bike experience was a 600cc yamaha. Went through the learning tree. Yep rode straight through a pine, or evergreen tree. That was like 12 years ago and the hole is still there for the most part. Got kinda good at riding it too. Then I got free reign of a Honda 900 RR. Yep, 98 mph on the city streets, 8 to 10 inch rolling wheeling in second gear for the wow experience. No helmet or license. I was Stupid! Then rode off on my uncles fairly new at the time 98 Honda Blackbird XX 1100. It was like having a big block. Monster torque at half the throttle. He was scared I would fall but it went fine. I wanted to buy it because he put 1800 miles on it in 10 years but he wouldn't let me. He sold it to some other guys that werecked it a year later. No bike dude. At least until he is 27/28.

It's your house and your rules. I can't condem sportbikes since I've had 3 ZX7's 2 Gixxer 1000's and 6 R1's, but I'll tell you this. I've seen a few of my adult friends bury their children due to sportbikes. You need to think long and hard about this one.

1) all that trail riding DOES help on the street!!! Not with traffic, but with handleing the conditions of the road...being able to handle all the bumps, dips, drops, dirt, rocks, etc..of the trail translates into being mindful of how the road is while riding. GOOD THING!!! LOTS of beginner riders don't pay attention to the actual road until they are given a reason to (crash).

2) 9% isn't a great rate. But it also isn't a bad one considering age, credit exerperience (at least from what you were saying bout wanting to 'build' credit), and type of bike he is buying. (though agree...used is a much better route for whatever bike he looks at)

3) you really should know if your own kid can handle that machine. Is he an adrenaline junky? If so....maybe not the best bike.

4) If his reason is 'gas mileage' throw that back in his face....tell him to look at cruisers instead!!! Has he been on a cruiser? A good 800-950cc import can still be a really quick machine. BUT they don't make you want to go faster!! (We all have TB's...we know how a machine can make you wanna do that!! :) ) Cruisers get really good mileage...have you sit in a position that is more comfortable for longer periods of time (for most people), are larger and more visable to SOME people...(others wouldn't see a dump truck)....they are still really quick...

5) and insurance is MUCH...MUCH...MUCH...lower on a cruiser. Has he looked at that?

I've ridden all my life. The one thing I've learned about the newer sportbikes is this, the technology put into these makes riding them very easy and gives any rider extreme confidence, even the unexperience riders. Loads of confidence+no street experience is'nt a good recepie. Hopefully your son is one of those that does'nt think he's invincible. I realize now what I put my parents through when I was 21.

You are SPOT on its the other drivers that worry me

He took my T for a ride and said don't sell it. And the T is slow  I honestly dont think it would be good for him.

I told him a cruiser is easier to ride plus a ferring is so nice that it cuts wind, bugs & keeps you warmer at night.

Not sure but I need to eventually get him off my insurance & am currently at 7 vehicles with 2 boys on the policy & boy what a jump in price.. I remember 3 cars at under 1k
