Back story: I'm the third owner of my GN and very familiar with the history of the car. The first owner had the car repainted at some point and ultimately ended up leaving the car in a barn/shed for several years before the car was rescued by the second owner. The second owner made some minor improvements to the vehicle during the short period that he owned the car. My car rolled off the assembly line sometime in November of '87, making it among one of the last GNs to roll out.
Yesterday, I noticed that the gray leather on the steering wheel was getting so worn that a hole has started forming at the base of the wheel. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that I have a maroon wheel which was recovered in gray leather at some point. I've always known that the stitching on the wheel did not match the stitching of factory GNs. Knowing the history of the car, I find it hard to believe that there were any circumstances that occurred in which the original wheel was removed, replaced with a different wheel, and then recovered in gray leather. I know for a fact that the second owner never did this and the leather that's on there now looks as old as the car itself.
Is there a possibility that Buick ran out of gray wheels and started having other wheels recovered to meet the demand on the assembly line?
