My winter project

I figured I would share what I've been doing so far this winter. Finally had some time over Christmas to clean the garage and get some things done on the 87 GN.

I'm not one of the big stage 2 guys on here doing all the fancy machining and spending thousands, but it's a start.

Started working on pulling the old turbo and down pipe off to get ready for some new to me parts. Thanks coach for the dp and 87chriss for the 60-1 turbo. Can't wait to get the parts and start putting them in.

While I've been waiting, I pulled the valve covers to put in the new sealed power vs677 springs. While they were off I decided to start doing some of my own customizing to the stock parts.

Since I needed to do some painting with the GN in the garage I decided to build a small lighted spray booth to paint some of the small parts. I had a blower fan and some foil face insulation, so I decided to do it somewhat correct so I didn't get a ton of cold air coming into the garage from it.

Painted the valve covers black and sanded off the ribs for some aluminum to show. Also painted the up pipe and coolant line since I had to remove them to get the pass v cover off. What a pain.

Next project will be dropping the trans to put in a different converter from 87chriss, and dropping the fuel tank to install the dw300 I got from coach.

Will be switching to E85 thanks to jdpolzin for all of the turbo, trans, and injector help. Next purchase will be 120s, modded ECM, and tt chip. Hopefully this will satisfy me for the summer. Can't wait for the snow to melt!

Keep at it. The clean engine look will really turn heads later on if you keep at it. Mine looked awful 6 years ago but I had a lot of the parts powder coated silver which really helped and now the engine bay looks fairly decent.

The valve covers look sweet, I have been contemplating doing the exact same thing for a while now. When I do them I will be including the plenium (dog house) with the same paint scheme. I think doing this gives the engine a whole new look,a some what sinister look. I might even powder coat the turbo cover black, to tie everything together, if I ever put it back on. I'm going to do the doghouse as well, I need to pull that off to put in the RJC power plate. I'm contemplating what to do with the TB, leave it the natural aluminum color, or paint it black like the rest. I wish it was all powder coated, but baby steps for now. I'm bead blasting everything then zinc primer and trim black paint. I tried gloss black first, but I didn't like the look. I wish I had an oven to cure the paint a little.

While your at it you could send your TB and plenium out to Steve Monroe and have it ported to 62mm.

Throttlebody's.com I believe he charges $125 for TB and $75 for plenium, I going to send him mine soon. You can check him out, I read he does great work. Kyle

The throttlebody comes back looking like new. All new parts, seals, ect. He did one for me several years ago.. I was more than pleased. By the way. You work so far looks great.

Just got the gaskets for the doghouse, and the s hose. Got AC Delco parts from Amazon, I know we are supposed to support the board, but I have a prime account with 2 day shipping. Anyhow, the only "S" bypass hose I could find was from goody parts and they wanted $55 for it. Insane! Got it for $12.

Still waiting for the other heater hose from pump to pipe.

My parents own an Auto Value, and I never thought I would have to pay retail price for car parts. It's amazing how few things they can get for an 87 GN. Everything I try to get is either not available or special order right from the manufacturer.

Repaired the fuel filler neck today. It leaked whenever I had over a 1/2 tank of fuel in it. Resoldered the neck onto the tank.

This normally should be done with a hot iron and not a torch, but I didn't have one. I flushed the tank with water a couple times, then did the pucker and test to make sure it wouldn't blow.

Finally figured out how to post thumbnail images as well.
