Need advice steering wheel problem.

Noticed the other day that there was some radial play in the streeing wheel, at the tilt joint. If it is a joint, I have no idea how this thing worksmechanically . Today I noticed it has gotten worse, like there is about a 1/4 inch movement now. This is not good and I have parked it till I figure out what the hell is wrong .
There is no play if you try and pull the wheel toward the driver , but push with one hand / and pull with the other and its becoming scary...
I have never had a tilt steering wheel apart so any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Is there a nut that is coming loose, how does this joint work, is it a universal type joint with a locking detent.
Does any one know .

Sounds like there's a loose nut behind the wheel. No, seriously. Take off the horn cap by removing the 2 allen head bolts at the 3 and 9 position and check to see if the nut is loose holding the wheel to the shaft. Should only take 5 minutes.

If this is tight,then you need to check a litter deeper into the column and remove the wheel. Just under the T/S switch are some screws that hold the column housing and keep the bearings tight. Check em out if you still have a problem.

It's very common on G-body tilt steering columns.

You'll need a long 1/4 extension with a 1/4" or 5/16" socket (I can't remember the size). You'll also have to remove the steering wheel, and a few things behind it (I can't remember this as well ).

The screws are accesible after you move the T/S switch out of the way. About a 30 min. job.

I think I was thinking of a nontilting column. The article is correct.
