Hey guys-

I'm new to the whole turbo thing, but a post was put up for a "hot air" motor and acc. What I'll thinking about doing a swap out with my F-body (4th gen V6 3.4L). I know doing this swap would not be an easy thing and that does not bother me. What I'm curious about is more power/boost for a hot air engine?? I've seen some sigs with mid 14's on these cars and I know the 87 IC motors are pulling 11's or lower. I would like to get a good 12 out of something like this. So... for the questions:

  1. Can the turbo be moved off the top of the motor with different manifolds or other way? (motor is under the dash/windshield on the F-body)
  2. What are the down sides to a 85 setup vs. 87 setup?
  3. How hard is it to IC an 85 setup?
  4. Do I need to run an auto or can I continue using a manual trans?
  5. Does anyone know of a Detroit shop for motor work? (obviously a rebuild is in order)
    [/list=1]

Any other help/suggestion you all have would be great. I have to consider you guys as experts in this arena because you guys own/modify them, I don't (yet ;) )

    Thanks

  1. 1. anything can be done given enough money...Problem right now is, the one shop that was modifying intakes for the hot-airs has run into some problems and won't be doing those any more, if at all...

    2. The downsides are the (and I'll probably get flamed for saying it), is that it is easier to make more power with the 87 setup...

    3. See answer #1...With your situation, you can't even go with a Spearco setup, because it's still using the turbo in the stock hotair location...

    4. The general concensus is to stay with an automatic...See the transmission tech section for more info on the manual vs. auto debate...

    5. I'm not sure who in Detroit still does work on these motors...Mike Licht @ Ramchargers may be able to steer you to a reputable engine rebuilder in the Detroit are for the turbo Buick motors...

In the long run, I personally think that you would be better off going with the 87 setup...There have been several people that have swapped these motors into an F-body...You would actually be better off asking for more info in the general tech section of this BB...

    Hope this helps...

yup, you're much better off going with the 87 setup, both for power and installation.i've been under the hood of a few 4th gens and there's no way in hell you'd get the hotair motor to fit.

you're also better off to just forget about the manual trans.it'll be a nightmare to adapt,then it'll be slow(i don't care if you're ronny sox,you can't shift fast enough)then it'll break:D.

you will also probably need to replace the glass factory rear end.

do a search in general tech, there have been a lot of posts on this subject.

later,sean
