Need HELP w/ Engine Noise???!!!???

I have an 87 turbo t, 40k miles on rebuild and brand new head gasket, valve job, new springs, and mild port/polish job. Everything else is basically stock w/ usual upgrades. I just got car back from shop after popping head gasket. Anyway, I was out tuning car and after a full throttle run, I notice my scanmaster's knock sensor is going crazy, 18.1, 12.3, 2.1, 20.4,4.9, etc. This is @ 30 mph, with very little throttle. I turn down the radio and I'm hearing this awful noise. The car idles and runs ok, but the knock sensor limits any power at all. It is a cluncking noise, but not steady. I had several different mechanics listen to it. They all thought it was a cracked flywheel. So we drop tranny and pull flywheel out. It's ok. On guy said he thought it was the camshaft button? Anyway, anybody had a similar experience or know what might be making all the noise?

First Thing - Park It

Hopefully it is something simple but if not, driving will only cause more damage. Would have to hear the knock to know for sure but it could be a broken rocker arm shaft or a rod bearing. Try removing the valve covers and report back to us.

It could also be a lifter. I had one car that had been stored for almost 3 years that had a lifter clatter after storage. Not severe, but annoying.

They can get stuck in the "pumped up" position in storage. You can try draining the oil, running a 50/50 Rislone/oil mixture for 30 minutes, then changing that mixture again. This might help, but it may need replacement. The down side of hydraulic lifters.

Now, lifter & other mechanical noise on the Turbo V6 IS a big problem, because the knock sensor will act like it's knocking. That's also why it's not a good idea to use Crane or Rhodes lifters of the types that lets you use a hotter cam & still idle. They tic as well.

Camshaft button? I would think that would be a constant noise.

Hi,
Fresh headgaskets? Possibly, a chunk of carbon was left on a piston top. It will make enough noise to make you think it'll come unglued any moment.Not likely, but possible.Usually, a few wot snaps will blow it out the exhaust. Have someone with a stethescope listen to it before you attempt this.

It could be the camshaft button...if its not there!.the cam will walk and the cam rampslWILL collide with the lifters..it makes a hell of a noise..I had a customer that had some work done..by his local auto repar man... and the cam button was just part of the problems I found..good luck joe

I tightened torque converter bolts and replaced flywheel. Same noise, any thoughts?

Possible thrust bearing noise, try checking your crankshaft endplay and check back with us. If it's like mine you won't need a micrometer to measure it!
