Hi all,

Went to Island last night. I got 7 runs in! It was great.

Short version:
Ran an 11.83 @ 115.0.

Long version:

Got there and saw there were 2 other GNs there. One was a board member with whom I've exchanged lots of e-mail but had never met in person. It's great to see people in real life. His car was running really great though neither of us could hook up on our new Hoosier QTPs (more on that in a minute). The other GN guy didn't really come over to talk to us.

I put 5 gallons of 116 fuel in it along with the 8-9 gallons of 100 octane I already had. I figured I wouldn't have to worry about knock and I can focus on other things. I was right.

First run I just rolled up in "street" trim. Didn't mess with the air in the tires or make any adjustments. I ran 12.0 @ 111.

So right off the bat I was slower than my best MPH last year but close to the ET. New mods this year are PT-61, 9x11 converter @ 3400 stall, 60# injectors and a PTE doghouse.

Second run I took some air out of the QTPs. Put both at around 15 psi. I was rewarded with a crappier 60' time and ran a 12.2 @ 111.

Third run I figured I'd change chips. I took the TT chip out and replaced it with my Extender. I spun even worse (2.0 60' time) and ran a 12.8 @ 108. In all fairness the Extender chip is an "alky" chip and the TT chip is a 100 octane chip. The TT also locks the converter at 90 MPH. So I put the TT chip back in.

Fourth run I figured I'd just concentrate on launching it. Made no other changes. Got a 1.9 60' time and a 12.2 @ 111. Hmmmm. The QTPs were beginning to piss me off.

Fifth run I put MORE air in the QTPs. 60' was 2.3, ET 12.9 @ 112. This time I actually looked over at the boost gauge. 22 PSI. DOH! Need more boost.

Sixth run I turned the boost up to 25 PSI. Took some air out of the Hoosiers which got me a 1.807 60'. Got a 11.89 @ 114.95. That's better - a new personal best.

I lined up one more time without changing anything. Figured I'd get the QTPs REALLY hot this time. Got a 1.817 60' and ran an 11.83 @ 115.0, besting my previous best from minutes earlier.

The last run was vs. a new SRT-10 Ram pickup. 500 HP. He had been running high-15s @ 95-97 MPH all night. As soon as I launched he threw in the towel. He ran a 20.9 @ 72 MPH.

All in all, my 1/8 mile times have not changed with the new parts. The improvements are after the 1/8th. It's pulling harder on the "big end" as they say, but I'm not sure if it's just because the converter is locking or not. The car should be faster, but I'm not running an aggressive chip yet. O2s are good and it's not knocking. I'm going to get a "real" race chip or two and see what happens. Also I'm at around 5300 RPM at the end - not sure if I need to move to a 28" tire or not.

Jim

Thanks.

Even though I've had the car for a few years I'm finally beginning to get an appreciation for the delicate balance between chips, boost, octane, traction, etc. I had underestimated the difference between a "street" chip and a race chip as well as the effects of locking the TC.

Hopefully can get much deeper into the 11s before the end of the year.

Jim

Congrats on the new best.....

I just got my new best mph last week - 115.77.

My question is if you have an extender and translator plus - why are you changing chips? The extender goes from mild to wild with a couple clicks, not to mention all the cool features.

Congrats on your MPH. I'd really like to get closer to 120 but I'm not sure how to do it.

When I first got the 60# injectors there weren't many people burning chips for them. I heard good things about the TurboTweak chips so I got one. It worked good so I didn't mess with it.

My Extender Extreme chip is a 98 octane chip which I guess I can adjust with the T+. And I can program in a TC lockup too. Just lazy I guess. I haven't installed the wire that allows me to access the "Extreme" features of the Extender either. As they say, "it's on my to-do list".

I was really surprised at the difference between the 100 Octane TT and the 98 octane Extender. Without making any other changes there was a 3 MPH difference between the 2. Could it all be in the TC lockup? The TT chip seems to be locking at 90 MPH, the Extender isn't set up for a lockup (yet).

I'd be willing to bet the difference is in the timing.

As far as your rpm's go-are you running a stock or aftermarket cam?

So I could make my 98 Octane chip perform as well as the 100 octane chip by bumping up the timing?

Cam is aftermarket. Not sure of the specs - the engine builder says he has a custom grind. There are a few of us Jersey guys with them.

Read thru the Extender manual. Turn on Lauch assist - Lean Cruise - Open Loop Idle - Set the TCC to lock @ 75ish, then take the car for a ride.

I'd bet the MPH difference was the TCC lockup. Set the Boost where you want it and then slowly start adding timing.

BTW - My 115.77 was with the Extender 98 octane default timing of 23/21 and 22-23psi.

That's impressive. Was it setup as you indicated (lockup, etc.).

Yes Sir......

You should have any problems getting 120 out of your car. Just keep tweaking it.

Jeremy

you would be a lot happier with some real tires..........DOT tires are not much good at the drag strip......you are leaving 2-5 tenths in the 1/4 mile at the starting line

(what would your et be with a 1.6 60'????....easily done with slicks)

Congrats Jim! this at Island? I hope to see you there in a couple weeks when my collector reg crap all gets here. (Overdue insp 2 years now...hehehe... hope to run 120 too...on 20psi :-P )

azgn: Yes, real tires would help. I'm more concerned with MPH right now. I should be able to get some 1.6xx out of the Hoosiers though. Lots of other people have. I just need to learn my way around them. I've got an extra pair of rims ready for some "real" 28" slicks.

Jim: Thanks. Yes it was at Island. Can't seem to get any traction there. Some of us need lots of boost to get where we want to be - if I do get anywhere near 120 it will be with stupid amounts of boost. I think I can wring 120 out of it but it's going to take a lot of practice. Let me know when you're going out. Don't tell anyone but Island on Friday night is awesome. No crowds, no waiting.

Jim

Well I'll vouch for Jim's 11.83 @115 as I was the other GN guy there. Good to finally meet ya Jim.

I too ran my personal best. Best time was 12.35; best MPH was 115...just not together. Too bad I don't know how to drive.;) You'd think that after a few hundred passes after all these years that I'd know what I was doing. My consolation is in the 115 MPH. Not too shabby for a TA49, 009s and a stock big neck intercooler.

My first time out on the Hoosier QTPs (27x10.5-15). Couldn't hook up. My best 60' was 1.94. Was hoping for at least a 1.7. I kept spinning them off the line...although not as bad as I used to with my street tires. Maybe I'm not heating them up enough. This was my first time doing burnouts. I have to say it really feels like I'm beating the snot out of the car when burning out. I couldn't help cringing watching the speedometer sweep across the screen while the back of the car shakes up and down. Felt like I was killing my baby. I probably wasn't nasty enough though! Anyway, I was only managing 2.0-2.1 60's. Man, if I knew what I was doing, maybe I could have got me an 11.99 or something. I'm jealous. :D

The "other" GN guy had PA plates and seemed to be buddies with the Z06 guy. Who knows, maybe he's a member too. I can't honestly say I'm the most outgoing friendly guy. I guess I/we could have went over to him to shoot the sh#$.

Oh well. I'll be back at Island in a few weeks for more practice launching. There's got to be an 11.xx in my future with my current combination.

Same here! I hope I didn't let the cat outta the bag on the Island Friday night thing. No more Sundays for me.

I stopped and talked to him after my 6th run. Honestly I got discombobulated and pulled up behind him instead of your car. He switched sides of the pits. I pulled up and got out and realized that it wasn't you or my brother standing there. He was cool, working the bugs out of his setup. There was another guy there that said he ran a 12.xx vs. my 12.xx and I was quicker. No one I ran came close to a 12.xx so it must've been you. Might've been the Z06 guy - you run the Z06?

There's near mid-11s in both our MPH's - just need traction.

See you at Island!

That be me. My second run of the night was against the Z06. I ran a 12.35@114 to his 12.54@114.

Youse guys got line locks for the burnouts?

I got a lot of 1.9's, 1.8's and a even a 1.69 my first time out with the QTP's.

I love doing burnouts (for the crowds) with the line lock and the Hoosier QTP's 27 x 10.5 x 15's. ;)

Got a few 2.0's too but that was at 23-25 psi. pressure in them.

Gave up on that quickly enough.

Ended up at 18psi. and launched with 8 psi. or so last run.

LVD in NY another borderline track prep place.

Yes I have a lock. I could get consistent 1.80x out of them if I took it easy at launch - found that out around the 4th run. I don't know what boost I'm launching at. Friday night is a pro tree so there's not a lot of time to build boost. I'd just push the brake as hard as I could and give it as much gas as it felt like it would hold until the lights flashed down. Once I realized that wasn't working I started launching a little easier.

My very first run - no screwing around with air pressure or anything - was a 1.719 60'. There was 12 PSI in the left tire and 22 in the right. I accidentally had the boost turned down but it ran 12.0 @ 111 which is a decent ET for that MPH. I was psyched since usually my first run is the worst but it went downhill from there until run #6.

I think there are some 1.6s in these tires but Island is notorious for being "slippery" and it seems like it's going to take really low air pressure.

Jim

Yeah I have a line lock too. In my case, the only place to put the blame is on the driver. I don't think 1.7s are out of the question for the QTPs and I have my car setup pretty good. The pro tree is manageable (my reaction times are usually pretty good). The track is a bit slippery, but... My biggest problem with launching is the cadence of the starter...or lack of. It seems like you never know when he's going to start the tree and I hate sitting there gunning the motor for what seems like an eternity. Nonetheless, these are just excuses and everyone at Island has to deal with the same track, same tree, same starter.

I just need practice. I'm new to the burnout scene and just need to find the right burnout length and intensity, the best tire and air bag pressures and the best launch boost.

I see better 60's for me in the future.

Mike
