New Engine Maxes out Oil Pressure?

Turbo Regal Community,

I am in the thick of getting my newly rebuilt 87 Turbo engine started.
I had to manually prime the oil pump, fight off a "no spark and no pulse to the injector problem, and now it finally started. I was going to run it for 20 minutes for the breakin heat cycle and noticed my oil pressure on my new VDO oil pressure guage was maxed out to 80 psi., so I quickly shut it off.
This motor does have a high volume oil pump. I still have the other springs that came with the oil pump, but none of the springs should cause this kind of problem should it? What could it be? Any help appreciated.

First off congradulations on the engine.

I won't worry about it. The oil is cold and thick. Run your break in procedure and see what the oil pressure is after the break-in. It will probably be alot lower, should be around 20-30psi hot, at idle.

Yes, the oil passages in the crankshaft were drilled.

I think I found a solution. I changed oil pressure springs to one that was a little longer but much softer. The oil pressure droped to 65 psi. I contined with the heat cycles, and like mentioned above the oil pressure has came down to about 40 psi. I may try a different spring once again. This is my first engine to assemble the heads, intake, and everything that requires putting it back in the car. It has been a long road, step learning curve, but thanks to the info in the threads about troubleshooting "no spark and no injector pulse" it has came to a nice scenic spot. Time for the break in miles. By the way the reason for the new engine is I snapped the thrust cap on the crankshaft in half. Now I have Pro-gram pieces.
 
If you peg your gage again, check for a short between the sending unit and gauge.
