Guys I have my new motor running and have oil smoke from it? I mean NEW to. New block, pistons, etc. I put 10-40 in it to break it in but from what I read on here I will swap it to staight 30 and try that. When you first crank it there is nothing but a little white for a few seconds like any cold motor does but after running for a little bit then it starts some smoking. I ran it down the road yesterday for a while and the motor might have 25 miles on it so far. I pulled back into the shop and there was virtually no smoke but when it sit and idled for a few mins then it starts up again with the smoking. How long should it take to seat the rings? I am hoping that this is all it is. Before I pulled the motor out to have it built every now and then it would just start smoking like hell but then it would quit just that fast again. It was weird but when the cam wiped a lobe on it I fiqured that was why it was doing it then. Going to pull the uppipe off and check it for oil in a min but the motor has seen no boost except for one time so far and it was only about 2 pounds and I let back off and took the boost rod off so it couldn't see any boost till I got it broke in. Going to check the pcv valve to be sure it is not stuck closed as well. Any comments would be great! About to leave out now but I will check to see what you guys think sunday when I get back home. Thanks Daniel Ray

It's gonna take more miles for the rings to seat. 25 miles is nothing. Just drive it and put some miles on it. What's the condition of the turbo. They can cause smoking, too.

break in

i had the same issue...i thought it was the valves...i went away after quite a bit of driving..drive the car...lots....

Do not be afraid to get on the boost. Seating the rings requires variation in RPM's and getting heat into those cylinders. Put some pressure on the rings by running conservative boost 14-15 pounds. Keep an eye on EGT's and monitor oil level the first 500 miles. HTH

back home thanks for the responses guys. I am going to change the oil to straight 30 and put some miles on it. I had the boost rod off because I didn't see it smoking before I went down the road the first time and it got up to about 2 pounds of boost but I don't see anyway that 2 pounds could have hurt it any? I took the rod off because I figured it would be better to run no boost till I had it broke in some but if it will help seat the rings I will put it back on and keep it under about 10 pounds for a while Daniel Ray
