OK, So my car has currently a KCF trans with a D7 converter. I recently picked up a 86 BRF that has only had stock power behind it. It's completely stock.

Now before I continue, tight budget, OK Very tight budget. That's why I didn't pick up a fresh rebuilt. So the thought was that I'm getting the correct trans for the car (I finally have all the right parts:) )and can now sell the KCF (Or thrown it out, seems no one wants it). The trans does not slip and shifts the way it should. Although I can't confirm this, I have no reason to doubt the person I got it from.

The car is slightly above stock. Stock Turbo, down pipe, No cat., Power Plate, 009's, XP pump, 4" Big mouth with LS1 and translator. I need a chip, hoping to add ALKY, that might have to wait till next year.

So my question is, what should I do to the trans, if anything? Would you recommend just new seals, any specific parts? Realize tight budget. However, I don't want to put this in and because I didn't spend a few dollars have it disintegrate and cost me a bunch or leak all over the place. Long term is to have it built. I have a rebuilt D5, stock stall. Goal is a street car with good manners. I've read so much about shift cal kits, bands, hardened parts, my head is spinning

Also, seen a few books on the 2004R, which is the best one?

Thanks,

Rich

What's a tight budget, Give us a cash figure and I'm sure we can prioritize your upgrades.

Thanks, hard to say exactly. I refuse to add the receipts up:eek: (Another words, I've already over spent) Anyhow, I now have the correct trans so my shift points should be where they need to be. Goal is to have this trans last a season, pull it next year and build it right. My questions was, do I just put it in as is? I don't want a leaker, and if there is somthing that should be done that is a high failure item and could possibly hurt other things on it's way out, then I want to address it now.

If there is anything that can be done now that would carry over to a build then that's great. Right now I'm saving my money for ALKY, but if I had to dip into that fund, then that would be OK. I just don't have the $2K or so to do it right.

So if you had to stage a transmission and prioritize the upgrades, what would you do and what is the aprox. cost for each upgrade?

Thanks,

Rich

Its a roll of the dice if you use it as it is. Do you know the PO or history of the trans? If nothing else, replace trans filter and use a good quality ATF. Also consider a drian plug install if your pan doesn't have one. If it were mine, I'd find the cash to have it rebuilt so only to have to pull it once. If you are anywhere near GA, PM me and I will give you info on a local trans builder that doesn't charge an arm and a leg who does good work.

Up here in Wisconsin, a bit far from you.

If your goal is only to last next season, I'd do a shift kit and servo from either Bruce at PTS or Chris at CK Performance and drive it. Maybe do the tail shaft seal just because you can while it's out of the car. I deal with Chris because he close enough for me to drive to and have nothing but good things to say about him and his parts. Bruce has lots of good stuff too, and is highly recommended here also. Neither are close, so it's up to you.
