So my cord is broken but the mast and motor are good. So first question is the $35 for just the cord the way to go or get the all new universal one like $45. And second how much harder is the all new universal one versus fixing just the cord

Kirbans has replacement masts. The cheap ones are just that cheap and don't fit as well because they are smaller

The way to go is to get rid of the power antenna. It will always break on you. It is a design flaw.

Where can you get a replacement? My antenna will not go up or down all the way and I've already replaced the mast cord even though it wasn't broken.

They make a universal full replacements for like 50 bucks at napa

Is the power antenna inside the fender? Or the easiest place to get to it

Do not buy this antenna from antenna x (or whatever they are called). It gets zero reception on AM and almost zero on FM. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Anten...el:Grand+National&hash=item2c6cd97680&vxp=mtr The antenna is inside the fender. You have to open the door to access the screws. The screw with the funny looking star washer holds the antenna bracket to the fender. I think the washer helps complete the ground. After removing the screws, place a 2X4 wood block in the fender to hold it so you can slip out the antenna. Should help minimize the cuts you will get on your hands. You also have to remove the nut on the antenna mast that holds it to the top of the fender. It is black plastic on GN's, chrome plastic on TR's. Do not lose it as they are a bitch to find at the junk yard. Here is an antenna sold on ebay and Amazon. I know nothing about it but supposedly it is AC Delco. Search for this part number: 22048583 Somebody said in the Amazon reviews that it does not fit the Grand National. The description on Ebay and Amazon says it is the GN. So buy it at your own risk.

One more thing....last time I visited the junk yard I noticed almost every car still had its power antenna. Most were located in the trunk and looked brand new, no matter how beat up the car was. I don't know how much the yard sells them for but if you want to make some dough just put them on ebay. Maybe just test them first with a hotwire to the battery.

If your handy with a low powered welder then try the DIY fix that was posted above in post #4. Feel free to ask any questions about the fix. I have done a few this way now and so far none have broke again. Must have a good mast to start with. Heck on my TTA the mid section of the mast was broke, had to buy a whole new antenna mast assembly which included the nylon chord, first thing I did was cut it off and replaced it with steel cable so i would never be taking it apart again.
