Newbie..Questions about '84 GN

New to site. Long time muscle car lover. Have '66 Chevy II SS, nine second street car. Also, '72 Heavy Chevy Chevelle and '87 Monte Carlo SS. Not familiar with Grand National, but have the opportunity to buy '84. I need to know what to look for to know it is an original GN. Car is pretty rough. Is there restoration parts available? Such as floor pans and interior parts. Sorry for long post. Any help greatly appreciated.

As far as telling if its a real GN, I'd say the only real sure fire way would be by the VIN because most anything can be duplicated. On the restoring side, you can find pretty much everything you need, may it be via vendors or from parts cars. And if I might add, if your looking to buy your first GN, I'd look for an 86-87 model, the years prior to that are not intercooled, make less power, have less potential, and are generally less desired. 86-87 is the best one to have, unless the 84 has been converted to the 86-87 style.

If the RPO sticker is still inside the trunk lid, look for the code WE2, this corresponds to the Grand National.

1984 GN's are pretty unique; the Lear Seigler leather/cloth interior is not available in NOS or the aftermarket.
Good used seats show up once in a while but they command premium prices. Floor pans are available as well as carpet, headliner, door panels and more.
If you're looking for a driver/show car, the `84-`85 hot air cars are fine. Whatever car you choose to enter the TR world, you'll have fun, it will depend on your goals, skills and budget.
Lots of members here love the early cars and can help you with expertise and parts.
As was stated earlier, the `86's & `87's are faster in stock trim, tons of parts are available and they respond to simple mods better since they are intercooled from the go IMHO.

If I had to "guess", I would say you are leaning towards the "performance" side.
With that alone, I'd advice towards the IC'd car.

Unless you get an absolutely KILLER deal, like a work on cars and have the equipment, I'd walk away from any of these cars that is "pretty rough".

Thanks for the advice guy's. someone has added a intercooler to this car already,
but it doesn't run well, that doesn't concern me as much as the rust . I am a diesel mechanic so that isn't the problem. Just want to make sure it's a real GN and worth restoring. Thanks, Al

Get out the calc and add up all the resto parts your gonna need plus all that time in labor and figure if its worth it, prolly by the time you add it up, you can scroll on down to the cars for sale section here and find a nice one, ready to go, it might not be a GN but the Limiteds come in many sleeper colors and sometimes a light green buick whooping on a new vette or evo is worth the price just to see the dumb look on the poor chumps face.
